Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

McCain ad showed Obama in a favorable light, thereby boosting his poll numbers

Do you remember the MCCAIN AD I posted late last Friday night? The one that was released just hours after the debate? The one that idiotically faulted Obama for agreeing with McCain on several points during the debate?

For the life of me, I couldn’t figure why the McCain camp would want to focus on gestures by Obama that showed him to be gracious and open-minded. I wondered if such an ad might actually backfire.

Well, it apparently did.  THIS PIECE about the stunning shift of polls toward Obama in five battleground states includes the following paragraph:

“Said pollster Keating Holland: ‘Obama has gained ground among moderates in all five states. That may have something to do with the first presidential debate. Some commentators knocked Obama for agreeing with McCain as often as he did, but moderates tend to like it when candidates appear willing to see the other side’s point of view.’”

Obama can thank the McCain campaign for coming up with an ad that highlighted those gestures that moderates find so appealing.

Kathleen Parker, whose recent derisive column about Sarah Palin I PASSED ALONG last week, has been getting a lot of threatening mail from the more rabid elements of the political right.

Read about it HERE.

Oh, goody! Perhaps we’ll  be treated to MORE STUFF about the Rev. Wright instead of anything substantive from Mr. Straight Talk about the real issues facing Americans in these troubled times.

Hey! Maybe they can try the Muslim angle again. That one always works with the knuckledraggers.

Right-wingers making a fuss over Gwen Ifill’s forthcoming book about black politicians

It’s not enough that conservative Republicans have labored mightily to set the bar for Sarah Palin only millimeters above the floor in advance of her vice-presidential debate tomorrow night.

Now they’re arguing that veteran journalist Gwen Ifill can’t possibly be fair in the role of moderator at the debate. The problem, you see, is that Ifill has been WRITING A BOOK about the rise of black politicians.

Clearly, they’re setting the stage for the claim that any stupid remarks Palin might make in the debate will be Ifill’s fault.

Every conservative screw-up is always somebody else’s fault.

UPDATE: Much more on this matter HERE (including lots of links).

UPDATE II: John McCain SAYS he has no problem with Ifill.

McCain predicts a “disaster” if the Senate votes down the bailout bill tonight

Mr. Straight Talk SAYS the new bailout plan is “a decisive step in the right direction” and expects it to pass in the Senate.

But then, he also thought the House bill would pass and even TOOK CREDIT for it just hours before it was defeated.

UPDATE: Barack Obama also was trying to SELL the bailout plan on the campaign trail this morning.

Obama surges to big leads in swing states

1 comment October 1st, 2008

The latest Quinnipiac polls SHOW Barack Obama building sizable leads in the swing states of Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Says pollster Peter Brown: “It is difficult to find a modern competitive presidential race that has swung so dramatically, so quickly and so sharply this late in the campaign. In the last 20 days, Sen. Barack Obama has gone from seven points down to eight points up in Florida, while widening his leads to eight points in Ohio and 15 points in Pennsylvania.”

UPDATE: There are tons of interesting data to chew on in THIS new national poll from Pew, which shows Obama leading by  six percentage points.

UPDATE II: Then there’s the chart below from the latest Diageo/Hotline poll on the question: Which candidate better understands your needs and priorities:

UPDATE III: Time magazine poll also has lots of GOOD NEWS for Obama.
