Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

Right-wingers making a fuss over Gwen Ifill’s forthcoming book about black politicians

It’s not enough that conservative Republicans have labored mightily to set the bar for Sarah Palin only millimeters above the floor in advance of her vice-presidential debate tomorrow night.

Now they’re arguing that veteran journalist Gwen Ifill can’t possibly be fair in the role of moderator at the debate. The problem, you see, is that Ifill has been WRITING A BOOK about the rise of black politicians.

Clearly, they’re setting the stage for the claim that any stupid remarks Palin might make in the debate will be Ifill’s fault.

Every conservative screw-up is always somebody else’s fault.

UPDATE: Much more on this matter HERE (including lots of links).

UPDATE II: John McCain SAYS he has no problem with Ifill.

Be honest for a second Pat. Her book is being reported as a pro-Obama book, not simply a book “about the rise of black politicians” as you water it down to be.

Were the tables reversed, and the person had written a pro-McCain book, you’d be all over it calling it another spoke in the (as Hillery once put it) “vast, right-wing conspiracy”.

Now, I know it’s not easy for you to be equal with BOTH sides of an issue, but do me a favor and try? I cannot recall a time where I have seen Applesauce run bits that are against those on the left, no matter how bad, dishonest, hypocritical, or down right illegal their behavior is. But let a republican do something someone of that most leftist page DailyKos (sp?) THINKS is afoul, and it’s a Applesauce headliner.

You see, it’s that political “hack” aspect of Applesauce that renders it fit for the bottom of the birdcage Pat, and keeps your work from qualifying as journalism.

Hey genius. Can you read the first sentence under the word Applesauce. If you don’t like it, go read The National Review. Pat goes to the trouble to put it out htere and we all get a chance to knock it down.

Egyas: If the debate questions were fair, I would have no objection to any moderator. As for your inability to “recall a time where I have seen Applesauce run bits that are against those on the left,” you apparently have missed the many McCain ads I’ve posted, some of them with no negative comment from me. I also faulted Obama for his ill-advised remarks about bitterness among small-town folks. So there, smarty-pants.

By the way, how do you fit your computer into your bird cage?

I’m willing to see if she does an “unbiased” job as moderator, before judging her.
But as Egyas said, you MoonBats would be barking up a storm, if the moderator was sympathetic to Conservatives. Too bad Obama chickened out of all the townhall meetings that McCain wanted, as I’d like to see how they do WITHOUT a teleprompter.

Snuss. We know, of course, that your opinion of her will be “unbiased.”

  • 6. SNuss  |  October 1st, 2008 at 8:21 pm

It will be a lot closer to it that that of you Far-Leftists.

Ifill’s book has been mentioned in the media repeatedly since July, but the McCain people never heard about it. And now all the right-wingers are acting as if it’s so unusual for a journalist to write a book. Incredible. They must figure it’s unfair for the debate moderator to have written a book when Sarah Palin has never even read one.

That’s not quite fair, Pat. She has, after all, read many different newspapers and magazines. She can’t tell you the names of any of them, but she assures us that she’s read them. So there.

Earlier today, I heard El Rushbo going off on a tirade about how the “drive-by media” is out to destroy a fine woman like Sarah Palin. Yes, God forbid that Katie Couric or anybody else should ask a vice-presidential candidate to tell us about her reading preferences or to name a few important Supreme Court cases other than Roe v. Wade. That @#!&*@! liberal media! How dare they?

  • 9. Pat Cunningham  |  October 1st, 2008 at 9:19 pm

Orlando: Palin’s ignorance of Supreme Court cases is astonishing. She not only failed to cite any of the historic cases (Marbury v. Madison, Dredd Scott, Plessy v. Ferguson, Brown v. Board of Education, Bush v. Gore) she also didn’t mention Exxon v. Baker, a case from just this past June which had major implications for Alaska. Palin’s office issued a statement on the case at the time of the ruling, but I’m guessing it was written by some staffer and that she knew almost nothing about it. She was probably off on a moose hunt at the time.

Guys, I don’t remember anyone asking other candidates to list court cases?

  • 11. swamprat  |  October 1st, 2008 at 9:56 pm

DingDong. They can’t because then Sarah would know the answers.

  • 12. DingDong  |  October 2nd, 2008 at 8:48 am

Lets surprise Biden with some questions about court cases and see if he can reel some off. Most of the people that can do this are lawyers. I am sick of lawyers. She is the only true outsider. admittedly she is very green but I don’t think it is that big an issue for the position she is attempting to win.

One thing about Ms. Ifil’s book, which not only features Obama prominently, but is scheduled for release on Inauguration day, is this: If Obama is elected, her book sales will be enormous, and she stands to make hundreds of thousands of dollars more, than if he loses. So, given the financial incentive, wouldn’t she be more likely to bias her questioning in favor of Biden?

  • 14. Pat Cunningham  |  October 2nd, 2008 at 10:14 am

Ifill hasn’t asked a single question yet, and you pinheads already are calling her unfair. You’re the biased ones. And if Palin performs poorly, you’ll shift the blame to Ifill. Typical right-wingers.

  • 15. DingDong  |  October 2nd, 2008 at 11:37 am

Pat: So it would be OK to get a referee that has a bet on one of the teams he is going to referee? Well Pat?

  • 16. Milton Waddams  |  October 2nd, 2008 at 11:57 am

Since candidates usually say what they want to say, regardless of what the actual question was, why would the alleged bias of the moderator (think this is trumped up) even matter? The unfortunate thing in all this is that there is an easy excuse for the Repubs when Biden mops the floor with Palin, it will be blamed on moderator bias, not on her unfitness for the office she is running for.

Dingdong said: Guys, I don’t remember anyone asking other candidates to list court cases?

Read this article from rrstar.com. It mentions a similar question being asked of Joe Biden, which he actually answered…

  • 18. DingDong  |  October 2nd, 2008 at 1:01 pm

Milton: The only other bill that he mentioned was one he wrote, they conveniently left that our of the article. He mentioned Roe V. Wade, which Palin did also. Is this all you have?

  • 19. Pat Cunningham  |  October 2nd, 2008 at 2:48 pm

DingALing: Why don’t you judge Ifill’s questions after you’ve heard them?

  • 20. DingDong  |  October 2nd, 2008 at 4:02 pm

Pat: Why not answer the question? It is a very good analogy. Would you want someone refereeing a game that they had a bet on? Maybe the referee would be fair anyway.

  • 21. Pat Cunningham  |  October 2nd, 2008 at 4:55 pm

DingALing: Answer the question: Why don’t you judge Ifill’s questions after you’ve heard them?

  • 22. DingDong  |  October 2nd, 2008 at 5:12 pm

Pat: My god, you should run for office. I asked the first question. Because if there is already an air of impropriety, why would you take the chance.
