Sarah Palin clearly surpassed the low expectations that had been set for her tonight and thereby, as I see it, helped restore the vice-presidential candidates to relatively inconsequential status, which is what they usually are in presidential elections.
That’s good news, of course, for John McCain, whose prospects had been diminished at least a little in recent weeks by Palin’s poor performances in interviews.
A quickie poll by CNN gives Joe Biden the nod in this debate by a 51-36 margin. We’ll hash out those numbers and others here tomorrow.
The impact of tonight’s event will fade soon, as the national economic crisis again takes center stage — and as McCain meets Barack Obama next Tuesday night in the second of their three debates.
UPDATE: Another quickie poll:
CBS NEWS/KNOWLEDGE NETWORKS POLL
(Uncommitted Voters who watched the debate)
46% of uncommitted voters who watched the debate tonight thought Joe Biden was the winner. 21% thought Sarah Palin won, 33% thought it was a draw… 98% after the debate saw [Biden] as knowledgeable (79% before the debate).
UPDATE II: Here’s a video of the CNN poll, with more details:

If you’re planning on watching tonight’s vice presidential debate with family or friends, it might be fun to play Palin Bingo as the comedy unfolds.
Game cards can be printed out from THIS SITE.
(NOTE: This recommendation from Applesauce does not constitute encouragement of gambling or any other illegal activity. This hype is presented as partisan political satire for the amusement of liberals. Any misuse of the Palin Bingo game by conservatives is their own damn fault.)

Faced with polls showing Barack Obama building a sizable lead in Michigan, where the economic downturn has hit hard, John McCain is GIVING UP on the state.
Meanwhile, four new tracking polls released today SHOW Obama opening a national lead of as much as 11 percentage points.
UPDATE: Longtime GOP operative Mike Murphy SAYS McCain should also forget about Iowa.
UPDATE II: THIS GUY says McCain’s people figure their candidate’s fate rests on three states.

Try this LITTLE EXERCISE from mentalfloss.com. It’s fun.
NOTES:
- You don’t have to name the presidents in chronological order.
- As you enter names in the answer box, they’re added to a list in front of you so you can see which presidents you’ve already named.
- Pay special attention to the rule requiring first names or middle initials for presidents who have the same surnames as others.
- If you use a cheat sheet, you’re an un-American moron.

At the presidential debate in Mississippi last Friday night, John McCain said something that’s been strangely overlooked by most of the media in their coverage of the event:
“I know the veterans, I know them well, and I know that they know that I’ll take care of them, and I have been proud of their support and their recognition of my service to the veterans, and I love them, and I’ll take care of them, and they know that I’ll take care of them.”
Barack Obama, for some reason, took a pass on that opportunity to expose McCain’s terrible record of support for American military troops and veterans.
Lest that record remain obscured, VoteVets.org has compiled a LIST OF ISSUES on which McCain has failed the troops and veterans.
It’s overwhelming.
