Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

Running out of time? Don’t want to talk about the economy? No problem! Try smears!

    Interesting Article:

Pro-Obama, Muslim-led voter registration in mosques
    Tuesday, October 7th, 2008
    Author: Chad Groening
    Source: One News Now

A leading critic of Islam isn’t surprised there has been virtually no coverage or action taken against a Muslim group that has been running an illegal “get out the vote” campaign in swing-state mosques.

Looks like the separation of church and state only applies to Christianity in the land of the free.

The group, Muslim Americans for Obama [MAFO], insists that all of its voter registration activity is non-partisan, despite the fact that its mission statement says it was launched in August 2008 “to provide a vehicle for Muslim-American supporters of Barack Obama to organize and mobilize our fellow citizens to get out the vote to elect Barack Obama the next president of the United States.”

Continuing, the group’s website states: “Although there is only a short period of time until the election…, there is much work to be done for supporters of Barack Obama’s candidacy. [MAFO] was formed to offer a vehicle for Muslim-Americans to mobilize quickly and effectively so that our community turns out in great numbers for Barack Obama on Election Day.”

The “get out the vote” events are scheduled at mosques in Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, and Ohio.

Robert Spencer is director of Jihad Watch, a project of the David Horowitz Freedom Center. He argues MAFO may be skirting the law.

“When they are running these voter registration drives at mosques, really it’s essentially illegal because they are clearly trying to get people to vote for Obama — and that’s in violation of their tax-exempt status,” Spencer charges. “So this is a group that is crossing the line and ought to be disciplined as such.”

The Jihad Watch leader, however, figures that is not likely to happen. “…I kind of doubt that they will be [disciplined], given the politically correct atmosphere nowadays,” he says. “I wouldn’t be the least surprised if no action is taken against them.”

Spencer contends that if a group called “Christians for John McCain” claimed to be non-partisan and ran a registration drive in churches, it would be all over the media and create a huge scandal and embarrassment for the McCain campaign.

This is where McCain needs to shine a flashlight (and watch the resulting scurry-to-hide).

Check out the MAFO for yourselves:

I fail to see a problem with any group sponsoring voter registration drives, whether are non-partisan or partisan. Is anyone refusing to let a prospective voter register because they state a preference for one candidate or another? Do you think American citizens who are Muslim should be denied the right to vote?

  • 7. echo4charlie  |  October 8th, 2008 at 8:27 am

That’s not what they are saying.

It is an illegal campaign (separation of church and state?). Their endorsements represent a direct challenge to federal tax law, which prohibits tax-exempt organizations from engaging in partisan political activity. The IRS should be investigating…….

Is that ok, though, because he’s a black/Muslim? Why such staunch support for a Zionist Infidel, a “Western Devil” who refutes any ties to Islam? Didn’t he refute being Muslim, anyway (even though he verbally stated, allegedly mistakenly, the phrase “My Muslim faith”, before backtracking and stating “Um, er…………my Christian faith” after being called on that statement?

Where is the ACLU? Where are the Americans United for the Separation of Church and State? Shouldn’t they be frothing and foaming at the mouth to sqelch and squash this activity? Doesn’t this violate the very core of their concept of existence?

Or, does that only apply to Judeo-Christian-based faiths?

What if there were a “Christians for McCain” registration drive at Catholic and Christian Churches across the US?

How would that be perceived? As a scandal, unacceptible, and the ACLU and Americans United for the Separation of Church and State would be rabidly foaming at the mouth.

They would be violating their tax-exempt status, as well, and would be punished for such.

That’s where the problem lies. Have our “racial and religious sensitivities” come to accept blatant violation and disregard of Federal Tax Law in want to show our acceptance of different cultures? Suddenly, although they are US citizens, like you or I, our tax laws no longer apply to them, but, yes, still to us?

Psst! Don’t anybody tell Charlie about the countless yahoo churches in the Bible Belt where the preachers are telling their flocks to vote for McCain. It’ll just confuse him. Let him believe his fairy tales and his bigoted theories.

  • 9. DingDong  |  October 8th, 2008 at 8:48 am

Pat: Evidence please. Where are the McCain supporters committing voter fraud like ACORN?

  • 10. echo4charlie  |  October 8th, 2008 at 8:57 am

A Pastor/Priest/Layman/Cleric can state personal political candidate preference, but can not use the the church as a biased partisan voter registration bank. If these bible-belt churches were doing this, the attack dogs at ACLU and the Americans United for the Separation of Church and State would have already charged into battle.

The Catholic Church, and most Christian Churches that I know of have simply taken the stance of being “Pro-Life”. We know that the Islamic faith is anything but………

Question: Does the Muslim Americans for Obama voter registration program include a free TV dinner and an ACORN bus ride to the polling place?

  • 11. DingDong  |  October 8th, 2008 at 9:01 am

echo: Your wrong, a free ACORN bus ride to ALL the polling places!

  • 12. echo4charlie  |  October 8th, 2008 at 10:13 am

I stand corrected, sir, and concede.

You are correct. an ACORN ride to all polling places.

I may take part in that program for the free lunch and scenic bus tour, as well……………

Really? So apprarenlty you missed the news that Jerry Falwell’s son, who I guess now heads Liberty University, is pushing a voter registration drive to get the school’s 18,000 Bible-thumpers registered in North Carolina so he can swing the state to McCain. In fact, the Bible-Nazis have been involved in political work for years. I remember some of their crap being passed around when Nixon was running. They identified Nixon as the righteous choice for the truly Christian.

Sorry, E4C, you’re not fooling anyone.
