Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

Obama vs. Palin in NYT/CBS poll

1 comment October 20th, 2008

There’s lots of GOOD NEWS for Barack Obama in the New York Times/CBS poll released today.

But my favorite part is this one:

“Mr. Obama’s favorability is the highest for a presidential candidate running for a first term in the last 28 years of Times/CBS polls. Mrs. Palin’s negative rating is the highest for a vice-presidential candidate as measured by The Times and CBS News. Even Dan Quayle, with whom Mrs. Palin is often compared because of her age and inexperience on the national scene, was not viewed as negatively in the 1988 campaign.”

Obama to suspend campaign appearances to visit gravely ill grandmother

Eighty-six-year-old Madelyn Dunham (above), the grandmother whom Barack Obama has credited with raising him, is said to be in “very serious” condition, and the senator will fly to Hawaii this week to be AT HER SIDE.

Some reactions to Powell’s endorsement of Obama are appallingly racist

The ugly image and words above are the work of syndicated conservative cartoonist Gordon Campbell, who SAYS Colin Powell endorsed Barack Obama for president only because he “wishes to see someone who looks like himself in the White House.”

If such sentiments were unique to Campbell and a few other nitwits, they could be ignored.  But they’re not. Rush Limbaugh is singing the SAME SONG, and a mere glance at the right-wing blogosphere reveals loads of denunciations of Powell as a “traitor” or a “turncoat.” These extremists, possessed of a power denied to us mere mortals, presume to know that Powell based his endorsement entirely on race.

I think some of these people don’t even understand the racism inherent in their theory. They’re saying that Colin Powell — decorated veteran of the Vietnam War,  retired four-star general, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff,  former secretary of state, a man of legendary professional stature — is unable to overcome racial considerations in choosing whom to endorse for president. They’re saying that Powell’s race supercedes all else in his mind.  They’re saying he thinks like a black man.

But, hey. Don’t accuse them of racism.

I missed THIS when it appeared in last Friday’s Wall Street Journal.

It’s worth your time.

McCain camp raised 10 different campaign themes today, none relating to the economy

How’s John McCain going to close the gap if he can’t settle on one narrative message?

THIS isn’t the way to do it.

Here’s your very own Electoral Vote Calculator

Let it never be said that Applesauce is anything less than a full-service political blog.

For example, at no cost to you, we’re providing this handy-dandy ELECTORAL VOTE CALCULATOR. It’s so user-friendly that even McCainiacs can operate it (although they may need a little help from their Obamaphile children).

Enjoy.

THIS is all quite innocent, of course, and funny, too.

But if Barack Obama did something like this, we’d never hear the end of it from the conspiratorialists. They’d probably try to tie it to Bill Ayers and ACORN and their other foolish theories.

McCain’s plumber stunt a big flop

New polls SHOW that John McCain’s effort to make Joe the Plumber (above) a populist icon has failed.

Of course, it didn’t help that Joe turned out not to be a plumber and that he would benefit, not suffer, from Barack Obama’s tax plan.
