“Attack” on McCain backer a hoax: Right-wingers mourn loss of chance to smear Obama

A local mugging story in Pittsburgh exploded across the Internet yesterday when right-wing loonies, led by the Drudge Report, mistakenly assumed that they had finally found the scandal that would derail Barack Obama’s campaign.

The story involved claims by 20-year-old Ashley Todd (above) that she had been robbed at an ATM and then mutilated by her black attacker when he noticed a John McCain bumper sticker on her car. She said her assailant carved the letter “B” on her face.

Wacko bloggers all over the place (THIS GUY, for example) quickly assumed that the attacker was an Obamaphile, and word quickly spread that black hordes were sweeping across America looking for innocent McCainiacs to molest.

From the start, however, there were a few conservative bloggers smart enough to pick up the whiff of fraud in the claims made by the “victim.”  Michelle Malkin, for example, who’s as far right as you can get, expressed SUSPICIONS.

Then today, the cops ANNOUNCED that Ashley Todd made up the whole thing and has been charged with filing a false police report.

A lot of gullible right-wing bloggers have egg on their faces this afternoon. Serves them right, the idiots.

POSTSCRIPT: John Moody, executive vice president of Fox News, SAID this last night: “If the incident turns out to be a hoax, Senator McCain’s quest for the presidency is over, forever linked to race-baiting.”

So there you have it. McCain is toast, by verdict of one of the top guys at Fox News.

UPDATE: The McCain campaign PUSHED this story, especially the Obama angle, until the truth came out.  Sleazeballs.

UPDATE II: CNN anchor Rick Sanchez FAULTS Fox News and certain other media for peddling this phony story to begin with.

UPDATE III: OK, now McCain’s going too far:

UPDATE IV: Here’s an OVERVIEW of how the “attack” story evolved in the blogosphere.

I think this will be a popular Halloween look.

I hope that the B she carved into her face leaves a scar that always reminds her that she’s full of bullsh*t.

Didn’t anyone wonder why the “B” is backwards? Like someone, say, did it themselves while looking in a mirror?

  • 4. LD  |  October 24th, 2008 at 2:24 pm

She should have gone with an “O”, you can’t screw that one up in a mirror. Unless she really meant it to be an attack by a Bob Barr supporter?

Speaking of McCain campaign plants… Joe the Plumber is talking about a run for Congress in 2010…here’s a link to the site. He might want to register to vote first…

LD: I think she meant the “B” to stand for James Buchanan, the 15th president of the United States. On second thought, she’s probably never heard of James Buchanan. McCainiacs aren’t too hip to history.

You mean like the way that Drew Griffin lied about the Byron York article in National Review.

You mean, how the “Kill Him” comment about Obama at John McCain rally was a hoax.

Well, ABBA featured the use of a backward “B” in their official logo. Maybe it was a Swedish terrorist attempting to extract revenge for McCain’s use of “Take a Chance on Me” as a campaign theme without first obtaining permission.

On a more serious note, it’s quite surprising that Michelle Malkin, of all people, was one of the first to blow the whistle on this hoax. After all, this is the same woman who accused Rachael Ray of sporting terrorist scarves as fashion accessories.

Well, it looks like it’s back to the Obama/Ayers nonsense for Hannity and friends….

As punishment, she should be made to read these posts over and over and over………..

I dont see the humor in this. This really could’ve lead to a riot or any other serious retailation. Its sad how the media put so much’ weight’ on the girl being a Mccain supporter and the ‘assilent’ a (in assumption) obama supporter. Regardless of who you support..thats just unacceptable.

It was probably William Ayers! B for Bill!

    Billy
or listen to ABBA over and over and over .
And over and over and over.

    Stupid McCain Plants !

I smell desperation and fear on the part
of the far right wing these days

Hopefully real Republicans and Democrats can get together and work on the REAL problems facing OUR Nation today

This partisan nonsense has taken enough time and effort away from REAL problem solving.

McCain will never again be trusted has he has in the past.

He should have quit while he was ahead

I was sitting in a dentist’s office on Thursday when this first hit the air. The monitor was tuned to the “fair and balanced’ channel. Faux News was about to go ballistic with it. I thought it sounded pretty hokie. First, why a “B”? An Obama supporter would have used an “O”. And why rob the girl at an ATM? And who would (or could) spontaneously grab someone and carve the letter “B” on them BACKWARDS? (Try doing that without thinking about it for a few seconds first. It’s a very unnatural movement.) The whole thing reaked of scam. I assume, and hope, that McCain had absolutely nothing to do with this and it was just committed by some braindead individual. McCain can screw up his campaign by himself. He doesn’t need this kind of help.

Craig, the first question is why would you go to any dentist that subjects you to the PAIN of FIX news (and i use the term lightly)? I would never financially support any business or professional that foists that lying station on its customers. Geez, I thought the dentist was supposed to limit the pain you have to undergo.

Secondly, the B was for BUSH as in the slimey shrub that carved up her face and all of our 401K’s with mcsame at his side in their race to the dereglation finish line that finished wall street.

  • 16. edouard  |  October 25th, 2008 at 12:34 am

The “O” wouldl be too difficult for her mentally so she stuck with the “B”, albeit messed up and indicative of her agenda.

  • 17. Echo4Charlie  |  October 26th, 2008 at 5:16 pm

She is a shameful person, and should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Shame on her. I have no pity for idiots like her.

  • 18. Milton Waddams  |  October 27th, 2008 at 10:29 am

If she had done an O, she might have gotten away with it since an O looks the same whether or not it was drawn in the mirror…
