Phony Lincoln quotation refuses to die
October 29th, 2008 at 11:14am Pat Cunningham
A few years ago, conservatives seeking to impugn the patriotism of congressional critics of the Iraq war invoked this bogus quotation from Abraham Lincoln to make their case:
“Congressmen who willfully take actions during wartime that damage morale and undermine the military are saboteurs and should be arrested, exiled or hanged.”
The problem, of course, was that Lincoln NEVER SAID any such thing.
Indeed, Honest Abe was a war protestor himself during his time in Congress. His CRITICISMS of the Mexican War in 1848 greatly angered the pseudo-patriots of his time and indirectly cost him his seat in the House of Representatives.
The phony Lincoln quotation has mostly faded away in the face of numerous refutations, but some of our right-wing friends apparently haven’t received the memo.

Let us match quotations.
In the startling 2001 radio interview, Obama, then a state senator in Illinois, laments that the Supreme Court of the 1960s “didn’t break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the founding fathers in the Constitution, at least as it has been interpreted.”
“The Supreme Court never ventured into the issues of redistribution of wealth and sort of basic issues of political and economic justice in this society,”
Barack Obama.
“Don’t interfere with anything in the Constitution. That must be maintained, for it is the only safeguard of our liberties. ”

Next:
CHARLIE GIBSON: You have however said you would favor an increase in the capital gains tax. As a matter of fact, you said on CNBC, and I quote, “I certainly would not go above what existed under Bill Clinton, which was 28 percent.” It’s now 15 percent. That’s almost a doubling if you went to 28 percent. But actually Bill Clinton in 1997 signed legislation that dropped the capital gains tax to 20 percent.
SENATOR OBAMA: Right.
MR. GIBSON: And George Bush has taken it down to 15 percent.
SENATOR OBAMA: Right.
Note: So far, so ordinary. Barack Obama wants to double the capital gains tax, placing it 50% higher than the legislation Bill Clinton signed to lower it. The truly astounding part comes next:
MR. GIBSON: And in each instance, when the rate dropped, revenues from the tax increased. The government took in more money. And in the 1980s, when the tax was increased to 28 percent, the revenues went down. So why raise it at all, especially given the fact that 100 million people in this country own stock and would be affected?
*SENATOR OBAMA: Well, Charlie, what I’ve said is that I would look at raising the capital gains tax for purposes of fairness.*

That some should be rich, shows that others may become rich, and, hence, is just encouragement to industry and enterprise.

Interesting that you should mention this. In three different ads, the income figure for Obama’s proposed “tax cuts” and “redistribution” (or however you prefer to refer to it) plan has changed, for the worse.
First Obama said that it won’t affect those making under $ 250,000/year.
In another ad, Obama, himself said that it won’t affect those making under $ 200,000/year.
Joe Biden said that it won’t affect those making under $ 150,000/year.
Which is it? Who’s going to be effected to the negative (we all know who reaps the benefit form this tax plan)?
