If you use that definition of “liberal” then you need to revise the left-of-center claim. Left doesn’t necessarily mean liberal. On the standard biaxial graph of social freedom and economic freedom, democrats are liberal on social issues, but less so on economics by virtue of demanding more government controls. Those who are liberal on both axes are called libertarians.
