Did Obama campaign as a conservative?

In furtherance of the flawed theory that America is a center-right country, some people are ARGUING that Barack Obama got elected on his “conservative” campaign positions.
I don’t think so.

That makes no sense at all. McCain and Palin were calling Obama a socialist as were some contributors to this blog. The fact remains that throughout Obama’s political life, starting with running for President of the Harvard Law Review, he’s been a consensus builder and actually very cautious about his stands. The notion that he is somehow a “far-left radical” is absurd. If you understand the politics of this country, nobody who is truly extreme left or extreme right has a realistic chance of winning the two major party nominations, let alone the presidency. And that’s a good thing. It makes no more sense to call Obama a marxist or a socialist than to call McCain a fascist.
