Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

Defying all the odds, Alan Keyes becomes even more loony with each passing day

Remember Alan Keyes?

He’s the guy who ran a quixotic (to put it politely) race here in Illinois against Democrat Barack Obama for a U.S. Senate seat back in 2004.

Keyes, who had gained some national notice when he ran for president in 1996 and 2000,  was recruited for the Illinois contest by Rockford State Sen. Dave Syverson, among others, when the winner of the GOP primary had to drop out in a sex scandal.

Keyes didn’t even live in Illinois, but the Republican poohbahs seemed to figure that their own articulate black guy could fare well against Obama, so they got him to move here from Maryland.

The result was a disaster. Keyes pompously declared that his candidacy was “God’s will,” and opined that Jesus Christ wouldn’t vote for Obama. He referred to Vice President Dick Cheney’s lesbian daughter as “a selfish hedonist” and denounced all homosexuals, including his own daughter.

Keyes quickly became a statewide joke and ended up with only 27 percent of the vote.

When he slinked away from that humiliation, I figured we’d seen the last of Keyes.  But, with hardly anybody noticing, he launched another candidacy for president in late 2007. Predictably, it came to naught.

Now Keyes is BACK IN THE NEWS, nuttier than ever. This time, he’s found common cause with the zanies who contend that Obama was not born in the United States and therefore is not qualified to become president.

Incidentally, HERE’s the truth about Obama’s birth.

Could Obama beat a man who can affect the weather according to his mood? I think maybe Obama could beat a mini Ditka, but it would be very close.

A Ditka-Obama race would, indeed, have been fun, but I don’t think it would have been close. Ditka isn’t very smart.

You can fool all of the people some of the time. And some of the people all of the time. And that should be sufficient (for most politicians).

Remember who brought Keyes to Illinois? Wasn\’t it Dave Syverson of Market Insurance Group?

Reason enough to vote out Dave Winters.

Why won’t the rrstar tell the people of Rockford that a tax was levied on them for the Rockford Metro Center, and that their state senator, Dave Syverson gets a couple of million dollars a year for selling insurance to the Rockford Metro Center via “Market Insurance Group, Inc.”? What a crappy newspaper, and the only daily paper we have!

Cunningham, tell it like it is! You have been around here for a long time. Stick your neck out and tell it like it is! Freedom of speech is necessary for democracy to work. Help us!

Palin-Keyes, the Republican dream team in 2012. It’s God’s will.
