Who’s Blago’s pick to fill Obama’s Senate seat?
November 25th, 2008 at 10:06am Pat Cunningham
Jesse Jackson Jr.? Tammy Duckworth? Luis Gutierrez? Jan Schakowsky? Lisa Madigan?
Hey, how about Charles Box or Doug Scott, both former mayors of Rockford and Blagojevich appointees to state jobs?
Speculation on the process available HERE and HERE.

Hynes would be an excellent choice. But I have to hope that our Governor will choose Jesse Jackson Jr. Doug Scott or Charles Box would also be good choices, but where do they stand on healthcare?

I’d like to see Tammy Duckworth as the next senator, however, it would mean losing the distinction of having an African American representing Illinois in the Senate.

It will be Jackson. But of course race has nothing to do with it. Is this a trick question, Pat?

Actually, since Blago’s going down sooner or later thanks to Fitzgerald’s investigations to join all his buddies in the Joint, maybe he ought to appoint himself just to get out of Dodge.

Politically, appointing himself would be a bad move. He’s still open to prosecution, and I doubt he would be reelected to the Senate seat. Politically, his best move is to appoint Lisa Madigan, who I see as his strongest possible challenger in the next gubernatorial primary. Myself, I agree with the placeholder approach; let us voters decide at the next election.

I agree with coldhotel. Blago’s in some deep trouble, and won’t (likely) be able to wriggle and squirm out of it.
We need someone with a moral compass. Not yet another criminal.
Our Governor’s Chair, here in Illinois, has been soiled and corrupted long enough.
We need someone honest, whom we can count on in Springfield (for once in a very long time).
I can’t remember anyone honest in that office beyond Jim Edgar.

I actually think that if he doesn’t get indicted, Blagojevich has a slightly better than even odds of getting reelected. It all depends on getting past the primary in good shape. The Illinois Republican party is in shambles; maybe they can recruit Alan Keyes to run for gov.
