Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.” |

Give them the opportunity to bring the 90s back. Then we will see how the NRA fairs. Look at what Chicago is trying to do. Essentially, they are undoing what Lincoln accomplished. I am betting on this administration doing just that. It is also true that Obama won the Catholic vote. We have yet to see him appoint a social conservative to a prominent position. I am betting that he doesn’t. Some Republicans are gleeful that there are fiscal and foreign policy conservatives, but they should not be gleeful at all until what has made the party win is actually represented - values, faith, tradition. My guess is that Obama is going to use fiscal and foreign policy conservatism to try to build a majority that will undo social conservatism. Look at his position on life. By far it is extreme and unusual. Even pro-choicers would fathom it if they actually understood his record. Having taught con law, he is well aware of the legal development. Additionally, he must be well aware that his position on marriage is inherently inconsistent since if it were left to each state, the other states would have to recognize those marriages. Thus, his is a position that would undue amendments passed by every single state that considered those amendments. The social conservatives did win those battles, principally in California.

Republican,
Well, yes, at the moment referendums against gay marriage are winning, but I fail to see how you spin that fact into a rosy future for the Republican Party. First, since young people are overwhelmingly for the rights of gays to marry this is a temporary situation. Second Democrats can easily get elected in spite of the current mood simply by also being against gay marriage, as all the major Democratic candidates were in 2008. Third, as the blog post you are commenting on shows other social conservative positions, such as anti-gun control, were not election winners in 2006 or 2008. There is no reason to think that anti-gun control is going to get more popular in the future and a number of reasons to think that the trend away from anti-gun control politicians will continue, as the blog post to which we are commented pointed out.

I hesitate to comment without all the numbers before me, but A. Zailchik’s interpretation of the election results as a a voter rejection of NRA-endorsed candidates, and by implication, pro-gun rights, seems inaccurate.
First of all, an A-rated Republican losing to a B-rated Democrat may be of no real consequence to the NRA.
Secondly, he states that the NRA had their “chamber cleaned” in Virginia. If I recall correctly, both candidates for Senator were rated A by the NRA. If you can’t lose no matter who wins, how can you call this a defeat?

“First, since young people are overwhelmingly for the rights of gays to marry this is a temporary situation.”
80% did not vote. We have yet to see.

If the Democrats blow their chance at “change we can believe in” and give us “mediocrity we’re used to” Obama and the national democrats will effectively become like Blagojevich and the Illinois democrats. People will count the days until they can be removed.

I’ve had my assault rifle for many years now and is no more dangerous than any other gun. If Obama is serious about crime he would support tougher gun laws ON THE CRIMINAL, which we don’t have. But i don’t believe he will enact tougher gun laws and anger his base! All your hype about “death of NRA”, etc. means nothing. The Second Amendent is still here and not going anywhere.
Why do all these links go to way far left website and loony “journalists”? What ever happened to un-biased stories containing actual facts?
