Freedom of the Press comes with responsibilities. Jeopardizing a Federal corruption investigation, especially one of this magnitude, doesn’t seem like a responsible act. They were right to hold the story, IMHO.
In return, the Feds should have given them first shot at publishing the information, when it was to be made public.
