Gay activists miffed at Obama
December 18th, 2008 at 09:27am Pat Cunningham
The gay community is in HIGH DUDGEON over Barack Obama’s slating of homophobic preacher Rick Warren (above) to deliver the invocation at next month’s inauguration.
UPDATE: Obama responds to the criticism:
UPDATE II: Lots of so-called pro-lifers are UPSET with Warren for accepting Obama’s invitation.

It’s like I’ve said in the past on this blog; a lot of these special interest groups that thought that Barack Obama was going to push their agenda ahead are going to be very disappointed, and will eventually turn on him. Most of them are so ingrained with the Gen X and Gen Y mindset of “wanting it all now”.etc.
And, a lot of people and special interest groups have completely misconstrued his campaign message(s).
Not going to happen. He’s a busy man who is going to deal with the pressing issues first. The important stuff, like national security, the economy, education reform, etc.
Code Pink is going to have to wait.

I understand that Obama wants to “reach out” to the other side, and that’s fine in certain circumstances, but when you reach out to the other side, usually there is another hand to grab hold of. The reality that he seems oblivious to is that the Rick Warrens of the world hate Obama, and all his voters will never change because there is too much money to be made when your flock is angry. The Christian Right will always find something to be angry about and the target of that anger will be Obama and us, including the gays and lesbians who are being deprived of basic civil rights.

The Christian Right is neither.

America never had these divisive issues and tension when the closet was full. When i was in my 18-30 age, gay rights and gay bashing didn’t exist and everyone got along fine. Now someone, somewhere is always totslly offended 24/7, blah, blah.

So Pat knows Warren and all his views intimately enough to credibly label him homophobic? How can you make the general declaration that everyone who supported California’s Prop 8 hates gays and lesbians? The issue here seems to be Obama’s selection vis a vis his supporters and not Warren himself.

Obama has always seemed like he wants everyone on board in his administration. He wants the old left rivals like Hillary, he wants to extend a firendly hand to John McCain, he wasnt Gates to remain dense secretary for a year. I think this is his way of extending a hand to Evangelicals who feel left out of the administration. After all, there are more Evangelicals in the country than there are homosexuals. I don\’t think he wants the appearance that his administration will exclude people. He\’s always been a \"one nation\" campaigner.
