Music as torture

I’d rather be hanged by my thumbs than have to endure something like THIS (F-bomb warning).

Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.” |

I had read a report some time back in a science periodical that talked about an experement conducted with either three mice, rats, hampsters, or gerbils (I don’t remember which, but it was some form of small rodent, anyway).
They had all three navigate a maze, and find a treat at the end of the maze, as reward. Each, at the outset, navigated the maze in similar time and fashion.
They then subjected each rodent to a different style of music all day, every day, for a month (one was classical, one was “Top 40″-style music, and one was hard rock/heavy metal; each was exposed to one dedicated style of music).
At the end of the experiment, the rodent exposed to classical music was able to navigate the maze in an impressively reduced time from it’s original attempt. The rodent exposed to “Top 40″-style music’s performance remained about the same, and the rodent exposed to the hard rock/heavy metal was so utterly confused that it never did finish the maze.
I think that’s a testament to the effect that this music has on people, as well. What else would spur someone to pierce their faces and tongues, as well as tattoo their faces, etc.
I know a World War II vet who summed it up pretty well (and this is a guy who has lived a life, and sen things with his own eyes that we are erasing from our school text books). He said to me, once: “Watching these kids behave as they do, and destroying their appearance, and the disrespect that they show everyone around them, well, it’s a sin. Plain and simple. A sin.”
You can’t always judge a book by it’s cover, but, he is right, in my opinion, in a lot of cases.

Irony,,,,
my son just sent us a review of the Metalica concert he attended last Monday.
“… 2 solid hours of music, my ears are trying to recover today. At the end they spent about 10 minutes after the final song throwing picks at people, Lars throwing drum sticks, shaking hands, and then saying how they will try to be back sooner then 4 years (the last tour). It was a great time. ”
Now, if I took him to an Arlo Guthrie concert, THAT would be torture!
