Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

Wall Street Journal poll: Most Americans don’t yet blame Obama for ailing economy

An overwhelming 84 percent of Americans in a new Wall Street Journal/NBC poll SAY the nation’s current economic problems were inherited by President Obama from the Bush administration and are not his fault.

Varying percentages of respondents said Obama will be held responsible for the recession if it continues another year or two or three. But only 2 percent said he should be blamed after six months in office.

Broader results of this poll will be released this evening, and I’ll update this post as they become available.

UPDATE: The WSJ/NBC poll SHOWS Obama’s overall approval rating at 60 percent, still strong considering the problems facing the nation.

Two-thirds of respondents view the president favorably and express confidence in his leadership.

The survey also shows that Americans, by a margin of more than 2-to-1, consider Democrats better suited than Republicans to get the country out of the recession.

Regular readers of Applesauce are familiar with my occasional GRIPES about the ungrammatical practice among certain Republicans to misuse the word “Democrat” as an adjective (as in “Democrat Party,” which is not the correct name of the political organization it purports to identify).

It’s no surprise, then, that I was gratified by news this morning that a Democratic member of Congress has publicly CRITICIZED a Republican colleague, Rep. Jeb Hensarling (above) of Texas, for persisting in this “Democrat Party” nonsense.

I have little confidence, however, that Hensarling will mend his ways in this regard. Old habits die hard among his kind. Besides, why would he want to risk having to apologize to Rush Limbaugh for flagrant apostasy?

Ah! You can always count on Fox News for the latest in wacky wingnut fables

Fox News, in a transparent effort to breathe new life into the fading fiction about federal stimulus money earmarked for a high-speed train from Disneyland to Las Vegas, has come up with a NEW WRINKLE on the story:

The train will deliver decadent Californians directly to the doorstep of a Nevada brothel — thanks to that demonic Democrat,  Sen. Harry Reid.

Fox News. Fair and balanced. And reliably nutty.

Another Applesauce milestone!

I was asleep at the switch when Applesauce published its 10,000th comment last Friday and thus failed to mark the occasion in timely fashion.

The landmark comment, something about Social Security, was submitted by Mike Carroll, one of our more reasonably well-grounded conservative regulars here.

I’m sincerely grateful to Mike and all the other visitors and commenters who have helped to make Applesauce the most popular blog at rrstar.com.

Here’s how we got into this mess

Nobel laureate Paul Krugman has come up with the MOST CONCISE EXPLANATION I’ve seen yet of how America and the world got themselves into the terrible economic crisis they now face.

(Be sure to browse the comments on the Krugman piece. Some of them are well worth your while. There’s a link to them directly to the right of Krugman’s byline.)
