Ah! You can always count on Fox News for the latest in wacky wingnut fables

Fox News, in a transparent effort to breathe new life into the fading fiction about federal stimulus money earmarked for a high-speed train from Disneyland to Las Vegas, has come up with a NEW WRINKLE on the story:
The train will deliver decadent Californians directly to the doorstep of a Nevada brothel — thanks to that demonic Democrat, Sen. Harry Reid.
Fox News. Fair and balanced. And reliably nutty.

Fox News knows that a story like this, however false it may be, will definitely arouse their viewers (pun definitely intended). Apparently somebody in Roger Ailes’s office took note of the story featured on the Michael Smirconnish Show that reported Utah — yes, Utah — as the state with the highest per capita rate of Internet porn site subscriptions among all 50 states.
Yet ANOTHER in an endless series of stunning examples of blatant right-wing hypocrisy.

As I’ve said several times in my column, therre are NO destination-specific earmarks in the stimulus bill for high speed rail. There are no earmarks at all.
There is $8 billion for undesignated high speed rail projects, inserted by President Obama. Chicago, the centerpoint of a high speed rail network of Midwest cities, is expected to benefit.
This was not put in at the behest of California or for Harry Reid of Las Vegas. But the GOP is trying to link the rail money — they’re opposed to rail — to the House and Senate leadership, which is from California and Nevada.
The California-Nevada line is nowhere near ready to build, but Californians did pass a $9 billion bond issue in November to improve passenger rail and build a French-style high speed network of 225 mph trains from the Bay area to LA and San Diego, linking with Sacramento and other cities.
In this administration, Illinois has pro-rail clout — Rahm Emmanuel, Ray LaHood and Obama.

You’re right, of course, Chuck, and I’ve noticed your posts on this subject. I also like the recent post in which you sought to correct the notion that so-called earmarks are invariably a bad thing. As you said, without earmarks, certain worthy local projects would be subject to the whims of bureaucrats.

Orlando’s post says, “somebody in Roger Ailes’s office took note of the story featured on the Michael Smirconnish Show that reported Utah — yes, Utah — as the state with the highest per capita rate of Internet porn site subscriptions among all 50 states.” I can easily believe that. Back in college I had a transportation geography class. We were discussing origin-destination studies. We found there was an abnormally high number of people who traveled between Salt Lake City and Las Vegas. It was way more than we could have predicted. Now that I live in an area with a large number of LDS members I see more evidence of it. Our local airport has non-stop flights to Las Vegas. So does Idaho Falls, which is even smaller, but is about 60% LDS members. And some of my Mormon friends like to visit Las Vegas much more so than I do. As the saying goes, the truth is stranger than fiction.
