Jon Stewart riffs on Madoff, Octomom, et al

Fresh from famously eviscerating the phonies at CNBC on his own show, Jon Stewart gigs on David Letterman’s get-together:
Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.” |

The Newsweek poll released this evening SHOWS a 58-percent approval rating of President Obama’s job performance, and 65 percent of Americans are at least somewhat confident that he can turn the economy around.
A majority of respondents say Republicans in Congress have not “made a reasonable effort to work with and listen to” the president.
Rush Limbaugh is regarded favorably by only 27 percent of Americans, but 48 percent of Republicans like him. Even at that, one of every seven respondents who identify themselves as “conservative Republicans” say Limbaugh has “too much influence” on their party.
The poll sampled 1,202 adults who were interviewed yesterday and Wednesday.

Legislation establishing same-sex civil unions was approved Thursday by a committee of the Illinois House and is headed for a vote in the full House.
I know of no scientific polls on the matter in this state, but national surveys show strong support for civil unions among Americans in general. I can’t imagine that Illinoisans, most of whom are Democrats, would feel differently about the issue.
Of course, opponents of the bill, many of whom are evangelical Christians, will raise arguments that this bill violates their religious freedom. That’s nonsense. The legislation specifically states that it does not compel any religion to “solemnize or officiate a civil union.” Those folks would remain free to spout all the homophobic rhetoric they want.
Geoffrey R. Stone, a law professor at the University of Illinois, makes a GOOD CASE for the bill.
