Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

Another tour of the right-wing blogosphere

It’s been a while since we’ve gone slumming with our friend Roy Edroso, so let’s get on with it.

THIS TIME, the focus is on the curious shift from calling Barack Obama a socialist to labeling him a fascist.

Meet me back here after showering and decontamination, OK?

Uh-oh! The theocrats aren’t going to like this!

Speaking to reporters in Turkey yesterday, President Obama SAID  this:

”I’ve said before that one of the great strengths of the United States is, although as I mentioned we have a very large Christian population, we do not consider ourselves a Christian nation or a Jewish nation or a Muslim nation. We consider ourselves a nation of citizens who are bound by ideals and a set of values.”

Not a Christian nation? Wait ’til certain TV preachers hear about this. There’s going to be heck to pay.

Even John McCain knows better. Just last year, Mr. Straight Talk DECLARED: “I would probably have to say yes, that the Constitution established the United States of America as a Christian nation.”

So, whom are we to believe? The suspected Muslim and perhaps foreign-born Barack Obama? Or the great constitutional scholar John McCain?

POSTSCRIPT: In a more serious vein on this subject, conservative religionist R. Albert Mohler Jr. has written a PROVOCATIVE COLUMN in which he argues, with great regret, that we’re living in a “post-Christian America.”

I strongly disagree with many of the points Mohler makes, but they’re worth your consideration.

Mohler’s views also are prominently featured in THIS PIECE from Newsweek entitled “The End of Christian America.”

Apoplexy over Obama’s European tour

In the interest of fairness and balance, to which Applesauce is unerringly dedicated, we offer here a roundup of conservative criticisms of President Obama’s trip abroad.

For starters, we have Frank Gaffney’s contention that the president is conveying MESSAGES to the Muslim world by means of a secret “code” in his words and gestures.

Then, there’s THIS GUY, who is quite upset with what he sees as “Obama’s seemingly compulsive need to apologize to foreign audiences on behalf of the United States.”

THIS OTHER GUY is beside himself with dismay over Obama’s bashing of George W. Bush and trashing of America.

And HERE we have a guy who somehow works Rush Limbaugh and Michael Steele into his rant about Obama’s regrettable speech to a Turkish audience.

Finally, there’s THIS FELLOW, who just can’t get over the sight of Obama respectfully bowing to the king of Saudi Arabia, a gesture which seemed to this guy to be more elaborate than the bow Obama accorded Britain’s Queen Elizabeth.

UPDATE: Meanwhile, as Obama returns home from his tour, THIS POLL shows that two-thirds of Americans think their president is respected by other world leaders.
