Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

Not to be outdone by Notre Dame, Arizona school has its own Obama controversy

While the University of Notre Dame has been making headlines of late regarding its invitation to President Obama to deliver a commencement address (see HERE), a somewhat different kind of controversy has arisen over the president’s scheduled appearance at graduation ceremonies at Arizona State University.

The fuss in Arizona is over the school’s refusal to grant Obama an honorary degree, a departure from custom with respect to commencement speakers.

Read all about it HERE and HERE and HERE.

Pat-Your old employer is running a story tomorrow on the ND/Obama invite and the reaction of certain bishops including Bishop Dohrn. Yours truly was contacted for comment in the article. If I end up getting Excommunicated I’m holding you responsible.

Pat since you graduated from Aquin Central Catholic High School or so I hear.

Question is how do you feel about Notre Dame and the controversial
    petitions going on?

roger: I’m on the side of the Notre Dame administration. I think the protestors against the Obama invitation are hypocritical (as noted here: http://blogs.e-rockford.com/applesauce/2009/04/06/notre-dame-alum-notes-hypocrisy-of-dissing-pro-choice-obama-but-not-pro-choice-sarkozy/.)

And I find that Catholics overall are more liberal than the orthodox crowd (as noted here: http://blogs.e-rockford.com/applesauce/2009/03/30/gallup-says-catholics-more-liberal-than-non-catholics-on-certain-moral-issues/)

But as a lapsed Catholic, I’m just an interested outside observer of this controversy. As I’ve said before, I don’t really have a dog in this fight.

Mike: I didn’t know about that story coming tomorrow, but I’m looking forward to it. Doran (not be confused with Bill Ayers’ wife, Bernardine Dohrn, by the way) is so upset with Notre Dame, he wants the school to change its name. I think I’ll have a comment or two to offer in response to tomorrow’s story.

I’ll tune in again tomorrow. Story is by an acquaintance of yours. Sorry about the error. I should have known better.

Mike: I’m wondering how they knew to contact you. I didn’t give them your name. Perhaps they saw your comments on this blog. That’ll teach you to be so outspoken. See you in hell, buddy!

Pat-I asked the same thing of the reporter and he said the RRS has a data base and I guess my name was on it as an ND grad plus he checked with the ND club of Rockford. The reporter did ask me if I was the same person as the occasional commentator on Applesauce of the same name and I confessed. My fifteen minutes of fame I guess. Save me a spot by the fire.

Pat-I just read the article in the RRS re Bishop Doran and Notre Dame. The reporter accurately quoted me but left out my comment that the American Bishops should concentrate on keeping their own house in order before they can be critical of Notre Dame’s selection of commencement speakers. Reference to the predator priest issue of course.
I’m disappointed that the comment was left out but my wife is relieved. Too bad. I have wanted to poke Doran in the eye on that issue for some time.

To solve the problem: Give Obama an honorary degree in Principals of Socialist Administration.
