Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

For years, the Global Climate Coalition, an industry group, pooh-poohed notions of man-made global warming — in direct contradiction of reports from its own scientific and technical experts.

 HERE’s the story.

Bill Maher writes a FUNNY COLUMN in which he offers “a list of Republican obsessions since President Obama took office.”

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, the first of our putative candidates for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, is employing distorted economics to WARN America of a “hidden energy tax.”

Incidentally,  Gingrich is SLATED to testify today at a congressional committee hearing on climate change. That ought to be good for a few laughs.

In all the current fuss over who committed acts of torture and who ordered such acts and whether such acts were effective, one simple fact seems to have escaped the attention of lots of people:

Torture is illegal. It’s against the law. It’s a crime.

You may think that torture is effective. You may think it’s morally justified in certain circumstances. Hell, you may even take some sick pleasure in the very thought of it. But nothing you say changes the fact that it’s illegal.

 Gene Robinson EXPLAINS.

UPDATE: Paul Krugman ARGUES that ”laws aren’t supposed to be enforced only when convenient.”

UPDATE II: The Gallup organization is CONDUCTING a poll this weekend on public attitudes regarding investigations into Bush administration policies on torture. Results will be published Monday.

UPDATE III: It says HERE that torture has not made us safer.
