Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.” |

 This is sweet:
 For weeks beforehand, the Fox News Channel promoted the hell out of the April 15 tea parties around the country, and then sent some of its own stars to bask in the glow of the populist fervor at those events.
 But now Fox is reporting that a poll conducted over a two-day period a week after the tea parties — a poll commissioned by Fox itself – SHOWS Americans pretty well satisfied with President Obama’s job performance.
 Mind you, that’s the same President Obama who was denounced at some of those tea parties as a socialist or a fascist or the architect of America’s impending doom.
 Some of the Fox poll’s particulars concerning Obama:
 –62 percent approve of the job he’s doing (a 33-point gap over those who disapprove);
 –68 percent have a favorable opinion of him as a person;
 –73 percent think he’s honest and trustworthy;
 –69 percent say they’re satisfied with what he’s accomplished in the first 100 days of his presidency;
 –a majority thinks he’s keeping his campaign promises;
 –a majority expects that the actions he’s taken so far will help the economy;
 –a plurality sees him as more of a “doer” than just a “talker.”
 So let’s hear it for Fox News, folks! The polls they commission defy the stupid opinions of their own commentators! What a network!

 Looks like President Obama is FED UP with reaching out to congressional Republicans only to get his hand slapped in petty partisanship.
 Obama is telling the GOPs that they won’t be able to use a Senate filibuster to block health-care reform.
 UPDATE: Here’s ANOTHER TAKE on the same subject.

 Upon reflection, I’ve decided to lift the ban on a certain Applesauce commenter who made an anti-Semitic remark here yesterday afternoon. I’ve also deleted the post that explained the reason for his banishment.
 Of course, the offender may not want to return. But if he does, I ask that he not refer to this ugly episode. That would only reopen the can of worms. Comments about the matter from any other readers will be deleted.
 My change of heart here is prompted by two considerations:Â
 1) The offender has told me he’s truly sorry for what he said, and I understand that we all say things we come to regret.
 2) His past contributions generally have been worthy, though I usually disagreed with them. It’s not as if he had repeatedly shown himself to be a bigoted boob.
 I want to make it clear to this guy that his threat of a lawsuit — made, no doubt, in a moment of anger and frustration after his initial appeals for forgiveness went unanswered – has nothing to do with my change of heart. He’d have no real legal recourse, anyway. He’d just be wasting his money. Everything I posted on this matter was true. Besides, I’ve never really been bothered by any of the dozens of threats of lawsuits I’ve received over the years. They come with the territory. (The death threats, however, are another matter.)
 Incidentally, I now regret having deleted all of the offender’s previous comments. But I did, and now they’re gone forever — and there were lots of them.
 In closing, I should note that the only other regular commenter who’s been banned from this blog will remain so. His offense, which I never revealed here, was so outrageous and disgusting that a reprieve is out of the question (although he’s actually had the nerve to ask for one).
