Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

Looks like most of the money and jobs for stem-cell research will go to blue states

I’m sure that those Americans who oppose embryonic stem-cell research don’t give a fig about the economics of the issue. I don’t agree with them, but I’m sure their attitudes are sincerely based on their sense of morality in this matter. Money’s got nothing to do with it.

Nevertheless, it now seems likely that those states where these opponents politically hold sway are going to miss out on most of the government funds for research and the new jobs that accrue therefrom.

 The story is HERE.

Gallup says Obama is just about as popular now as when he was inaugurated

On several occasions in the past few months, I’ve predicted here that President Obama’s approval ratings would soon decline, perhaps not precipitously but at least more than a little.

So far, I’ve been wrong – which makes me wonder whether all the garbage thrown at the president by extremists actually does him more good than harm.

Yes, it’s probably still safe to say that the Obama’s numbers will head south sometime within the next few months. After all, the law of political gravity has not been repealed. At this point, however, he’s still riding pretty high.

Attitudes about climate change can be as fickle as the local weather

To some folks — perhaps many folks — thoughts about global warming are shaped by local weather conditions at the time.

That’s why global-warming skeptics love it when temperatures in one locale or another are unseasonably low.

It pains me to say this, but I’m inclined to agree with conservatives on issue of hate crimes

So-called hate-crime laws have always bothered me, mainly because they amount to punishing people for their bad thoughts as well as for their criminal deeds.

THIS COLUMN by Steve Chapman enumerates other problems with hate-crime legislation currently pending in Congress.

GOP women are a minority in a minority

As the Republican Party sheds its moderates, it also sheds women, according to U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe (above).

Indeed, the gender imbalance in the GOP poses a major problem as the party seeks to regain power.

There’s more on the matter HERE.

UPDATE: Meanwhile, the GOP’s social conservatives say there’re being SCAPEGOATED.
