Is overheated rhetoric on talk radio an ominous sign of things to come?

Camille Paglia (above) says THIS of talk radio: “[W]hen the tone darkens toward a rhetoric of purgation and annihilation, there is reason for alarm.”

Apparently, even uber-wingnut Michael Savage believes there is cause for alarm. Incredibly unbelievable headline on Drudge:
RADIO HOST MICHAEL SAVAGE APPEALS TO HILLARY TO REMOVE HIS NAME FROM UK BANNED LIST… DEVELOPING…
Oh, you crazy Cons! The jokes just keep writing themselves!

Orlando: Your item on Savage/Hillary brings to mind another story about a right-winger getting help from the liberal enemy. It goes back about 20 years or so when the American Civil Liberties Union — the bane of wingnuts everywhere — helped Oliver North beat the criminal charges against him in connection with the Iran-Contra Affair.
Oh, yeah, and then there was the time the ACLU went to court to side with Rush Limbaugh when he resisted efforts by Florida prosecutors to examine his medical records in their search for evidence in connection with his abuse of Oxycontin (or “Hillbilly Heroin,” as some people call it).
Of course, there also have been countless times when the ACLU defended the religious rights of the Religious Right (to coin a phrase) in schools and the workplace and various other situations.
Conservatives hate to concede that the ACLU sometimes takes their side in legal disputes. They know it goes against the grain of their foolish rhetoric about the ACLU being some kind of un-American outfit.

Pat, don’t forget about the ACLU going to court to allow the Nazis to march through Skokie, based on freedom of speech issues. And yet, the far-right contends the ACLU only represents “liberal” issues. BS!

Craig: Regarding the Skokie thing, lots of liberals were sufficiently pissed at the ACLU that they withdrew financial support. The organization was financially stressed for several years (although, of course, it’s never exactly been rolling in the dough). But the outfit stood its ground in backing the free-speech rights of even scum like the American Nazis. That’s courage.

Nothing to worry about.
Radio is dead or dying, and the people who listen to it will die soon enough.
