Maybe it’s just a fundraising ploy, but James Dobson, a ranking leader of the Religious Right, SAID on his radio show today that the battle against us evildoers on the liberal side of the political spectrum is a lost cause — at least in the “short term.”
Of course, we shouldn’t take Dobson too seriously about all of this. There’s no chance that he’s just going to slink away and never cheapen our national conversation again.
Still,  I’m fascinated with his defeatist tone and wonder how it will fit into whatever game he’s playing.
I’ll try to remember to do an update on this matter as developments arise. But I’m a busy man; if I forget, somebody please remind me.

Nate Silver EXAMINES recent polls on the issue of abortion and concludes that “you can arguably perceive a slight one [trend] in favor of those saying abortion should be illegal. On the other hand, if we look at a different type of survey question — those asking the respondent to identify as pro-choice or pro-life — we do not perceive any such pattern.”

I was never a big fan of the late Tim Russert, but I’m even less enthused about his successor as host of “Meet the Press,” David Gregory.
Russert’s rep as a tough questioner always struck me as undeserved. But Gregory, by comparison, strikes me as a cipher.
So, I guess I’m pleased to see that the ratings for “Meet the Press” with Gregory at the helm are DOWN SHARPLY.
If I was running NBC, I’d give the MTP gig to David Shuster.

Steve Chapman DEFTLY MOCKS the ridiculous efforts by Republicans to frighten the American people about the impending closure of Guantanamo.
Unfortunately, however, some folks actually are dumb enough to believe what the demagogues are saying.

There’s lots of good news for President Obama in the latest CBS News poll, including the fact that most Americans expect that his choices for the Supreme Court will be worthy.
The survey also shows Obama’s approval rating at 63 percent, and there’s majority support for the president’s handling of the economy, while an increasing percentage of respondents say they think the country is heading in the right direction.
Find more on this poll HERE.
UPDATE: THIS GUY says he expects “Obama’s poll numbers to plummet soon.”
UPDATE II: It says HERE that six names from Obama’s short list of potential Supreme Court nominees have been leaked. Five of them are women.
