Is public support for abortion rights waning?

Nate Silver EXAMINES recent polls on the issue of abortion and concludes that “you can arguably perceive a slight one [trend] in favor of those saying abortion should be illegal. On the other hand, if we look at a different type of survey question — those asking the respondent to identify as pro-choice or pro-life — we do not perceive any such pattern.”

Without getting lost in all the mindless blather, here’s a simple question: if abortion is ever made illegal, what should the punishment be for a woman who gets one?

It’s too large a movement for a single answer, I believe. I’m sure some pro-lifers just want abortions to stop but I’ve heard a few pro-life movement leaders say the doctors should be put on trial. It was Randall Terry in the 80s or 90s I believe. I’ve heard some say they don’t want to punish the women at all but the doctors making money on it. That is really ambiguous but If you want to look it up, those are the search terms I’d go with.

PRINCETON, NJ — A new Gallup Poll, conducted May 7-10, finds 51% of Americans calling themselves “pro-life” on the issue of abortion and 42% “pro-choice.” This is the first time a majority of U.S. adults have identified themselves as pro-life since Gallup began asking this question in 1995.
By the way I’m for pro-choice to an extent.

It would not be such a heated issue if only the .1% of the horrific cases had the procedure, instead of the other 99% that have it for birth control. Then you have those who believe you should be able to get an abortion up until the day birth. For myself, if I am pro-life I am going with 99.9% of my sensibilities, if I am pro-choice I am going with .1% my sensibilities. There is a lot gray area in this argument.

So Mike, even if continuing the pregnancy endangers the life of the mother?

Here is the link to the Gallup Poll showing a trend toward pro life. http://www.gallup.com/poll/118399/More-Americans-Pro-Life-Than-Pro-Choice-First-Time.aspx. Interesting that the biggest change is among moderates. Another indication that the President is having a polarizing effect as has been previously polled and reported. Regardless of one’s ideology, we sure don’t need more polarization than we already have–too much to do that requires working together.
