For the life of me, I’ve never been able to understand the popular theory that Karl Rove is a political mastermind.
If I were a Republican (heaven forbid!) running for public office, Rove is the last person I’d want anywhere near my campaign organization.
His political judgment, as Jamison Foser argues in THIS ASSESSMENT, is “wildly overrated.”

The Republican Party holds a smaller share of non-Southern seats in the House and Senate than at any other point in its history except the apex of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s popularity during the early days of the New Deal.
Moreover, Republicans in the past five presidential elections have won  smaller shares of the Electoral College vote and the cumulative popular vote outside the South than in any other five-election sequence since the party’s formation in 1854.
There’s more about the Southernization of the GOP HERE.

It says HERE that Dick Cheney’s big speech yesterday at the American Enterprise Institute included a lot of “omissions, exaggerations and misstatements.”
Wow! What a surprise! Dick Cheney trying to mislead the American people! Who’d a thunk it?
UPDATE: Keith Olbermann also OFFERS a little deconstruction.
UPDATE II: THIS GUY says Cheney’s speech was “dishonest.”
UPDATE III: John McCain SAYS: “When you have a majority of Americans, seventy-something percent, saying we shouldn’t torture, then I’m not sure it helps for the Vice President to go out and continue to espouse that position.”
