Palin displays a fundamental misunderstanding of the responsibilities of governing

The Washington Post’s Dan Balz (a Freeport native and boyhood friend of mine, as I’ve noted here on previous occasions) SAYS Sarah Palin’s stated rationale for quitting as governor of Alaska in mid-term has left her “open to legitimate criticism that she is walking away for the wrong reasons.”

UPDATE: Here’s another pretty good ANALYSIS of Palin’s dramatic move.

Washington Post / Fox News / MSNBC They all have the answer what she doing. The one I would go with is Fox News over any one else.
We all will sit and wait and wonder, because we love her so much. If not she would not be getting this much news coverage.

  2. From a perspective of politics as usual, one could easily call her decision to pass the baton to her Lt. Governor a ‘misunderstanding‘ about governing.

What we know is, like it or not, Palin doesn’t do politics ‘as usual.’

Palin is different. Being driven by her love of country and her State, she is stepping out of political office so that she can get her message out without being a burden on Alaska in dealing with endless lawsuits. The tide of media opinion suggests she can’t take the heat and is getting out of the kitchen.

Fact is, her message resonates with conservatives, which is a smaller, less intrusive government, where capitalism and free markets, personal freedom and liberty will once again prevail. Her core beliefs are what is driving her. Not conventional politics. Her priorities are faith, family, and then her State, in that order. Essentially, it is all the things that the Obama administration, which only believes in an all powerful and controlling federal government, does not believe in.

There’s no reason to not believe the reason she gave for leaving, nor to doubt the sincerity with which she gave it. (Anyone see a teleprompter?) And I’d wager a guess that her not playing ‘politics as usual’ will give David Axelrod Excedrin headache number 10 trillion. All the speculation from pundits of her cutting and running is misplaced, wishful thinking.

She hasn’t given up, she has changed the game.

Fact is, Mr. Calloway, that these are the exact same arguments and platitudes which you Cons employed to sell the American people on George W. Bush, too. And we certainly don’t have to remind you how that particular presidency turned out, do we?

You are terribly mistaken if you think the American electorate is ever going to elect soont-to-be-ex-Governor You Betcha to any kind of a national office. I’m sure you’re familiar with the old adage “Fool me once…etc., etc.”

Who says you Cons aren’t environmentally conscientious? You guys keep recycling the same old GOP talking points over and over. It may work on the Fox Nation faction of your party, but the rest of us are hip to the fact that Ms. Palin is a one-hit wonder who reached the zenith of her political career on the GOP stage last summer in Minneapolis.

Orlando First thing how was the tea party? Second how can any body say what this lady is going to do. We do know one thing she is looking into a lawsuit against MSNBC on slander. But we don’t know that for sure.

  5. Ross Calloway is trying to tell us that faith and family are not priorities for Barack Obama. Typical right-wing holier-than-thou nonsense.

  6. Most Catholics voted for Obama last year, supported his appearance as commencement speaker at Notre Dame, disagree with the hierarchy of their church on certain matters of faith and morals (especially birth control), support the ordination of women as priests and favor repeal of mandatory celibacy for priests (which, by the way, was not the rule during the first 1,000 years of Catholicism). These facts may not sit well with you and Bishop Doran, but that’s just too bad.

Now, here’s where you reply that these people who disagree with you are not REAL Catholics (not that your opinion matters to them in the least).

  7. Nelson says:

She said she’s do the right thing for the state of Alaska…then, she resigned her office.
Obviously, she doesn’t want to be President of the United States…ever.
If she can’t commit herself to even one term of Governer of a state, she, obviously, won’t be able to handle a term of President. Luckily, we found out about her lack of dedication before she was elected to a post more strenuous than that of Governor.
This country doesn’t need someone who folds under pressure.

  8. Thank you interpreter Pat.

I can’t speak for Obama’s priorities. He hasn’t told me what they are. Palin has. Among the three though, faith, family, and the State, my point, which the interpreter here missed, is the ‘state’ part where their differences are. Well, that, and Obama puts the state first, ahead of the other two. It’s what statists do.

Otherwise, spending our grandchilren’s future in a blitz to socialism would seem immoral, like it does to Sarah Palin and I, but not Barry.

  9. Orlando Clay—
Fact is, Mr. Calloway, that these are the exact same arguments and platitudes which you Cons employed to sell the American people . . .

Those are not arguments Orlando. Those are principles.

  10. shawnnews says:

Exactly what principles do conservatives have that the rest of us don’t? Fiscal responsibility? No you wasted trillions invading Iraq on false pretenses. Judgement? No, same applies?
Less intrusive government? You gave us illegal wiretaps?
Responsibilty in governing? Make Sanford, Jim Ensign, Mark Foley, James McGreevey, Larry Craig, Tex Stevens.
Conservatives have no better people or principles than their democratic opponents.

  11. Sarah says:

She was using a teleprompter, Ross. It was a camera-mounted one, which you can clearly see at the end of the unedited video where they panned across the cameras to the onlookers. And you can see the operator with his head and equipment under a baby blanket (probably to shield from the glare of the sun on his monitor):

Here’s what the camera-mounted teleprompters look like:

  12. Mike Carroll says:

    shawnnews-James McGreevey is a Democrat.

  13. equalityrkfd= says:

At least now we have a an idea for atietle for her new book-”QUITTER!”

She has no intergrity what so ever, didn’t she take an oath to serve the people of Alaska? What about them? Didn’t they elect her?

She will probably become another Ann Coulter; they both plagiarize, have big mouths and nothing to say.

Can we be done with her now?

  14. Orlando Clay says:

Ross Calloway wrote: “Those are not arguments Orlando. Those are principles.”

Principles or arguments, it doesn’t matter. The fact remains that your conservative ideology has been proven to be an OVERT FAILURE.

You Cons just don’t get it, do you?
