Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

Sorry. In writing that headline, I couldn’t resist borrowing a line from Paul Begala’s spot-on COMMENTARY about the politics of self-destruction.

Guess who’s talking like a socialist

In a 144-page ENCYCLICAL LETTER released today, Pope Benedict XVI calls for an economic globalization that could ”open up the unprecedented possibility of large-scale redistribution of wealth on a world-wide scale.”

Redistribution of wealth? Uh-oh! Isn’t that the kind of stuff John McCain and Sarah Palin were warning against last year?

Isn’t that the kind of stuff Republicans call “socialism”?

Lest anyone think the pontiff unguardedly misspoke, it should be noted that an encyclical letter is the highest form of papal teaching. In short, the man meant what he said.

Oh, you’ll also want to know that the pope will meet on Friday with that other well-known socialist, Barack Obama, whose honorary degree from Notre Dame still sticks in the craws of some orthodox Catholics.

The funny Al Franken

Now that Al Franken is a U.S. senator, he’ll have to give his comedy chops a rest at least for a while.

Accordingly, I’ve cherry-picked a few funny Franken bits from a collection that the folks over at TalkingPointsMemo thoughtfully assembled.

Enjoy (unless you’re a wingnut, in which case you’ll predictably leave a comment to the effect that Franken doesn’t strike you as funny and poses a threat to the future of all Christendom):

 UPDATE: Here’s a video of today’s swearing-in of Franken as a senator:

Will Palin start a third party? The Tea Party?

There’s some SPECULATION among conservatives that Sarah Palin will try to start a third political party to challenge the Republican Party.

Oh, please, please, please let it be true.

Time for another tour of the right-wing blogosphere

Our guide, as usual, is the ever-charming Roy Edroso.

This time, the FOCUS is mainly on Sarah Palin’s impending resignation as governor of Alaska.
