Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

NYT-CBS poll has fairly good news for Obama

A New York Times/CBS News poll released today SHOWS that President Obama is in a better position than congressional Republicans on the issue of health-care reform and is just about as popular as Ronald Reagan was at this point in his presidency.

A few excerpts from the Times’ report on the survey:

[T]he poll suggests that Mr. Obama is in a decidedly more commanding position than Republicans on [health-care reform] as Congressional negotiations move into final stages. Most Americans trust Mr. Obama more than Republicans to make the right decisions on the issue; 76 percent said Republicans had not even laid out a clear health care plan…

At 56 percent, Mr. Obama’s job approval rating is similar to what President Ronald Reagan’s was at this point in his first term (53 percent); President Bill Clinton was at 43 percent. Still, Mr. Obama’s approval is down from 68 percent in the spring.

UPDATE: The poll ALSO SHOWS that even a plurality of Republicans favor the so-called public option in health-care reform.

Pat why is this the only Poll that has BOBO that high when it comes to health care. or even job approval rating. I’m trying to think the last time I seen a poll from CBS or even a news cast from them.

realfoxnews: The latest poll commissioned by your beloved Fox News has Obama’s approval rating at 54 percent, just two points below the NYT-CBS poll (which is within the stated margin of error in both polls). Same thing with health care. Fox has his rating at 44 percent, while NYT-CBS has it at 47 percent. In other words, both polls have roughly the same numbers. So there.

Fox came out with new ones today, he dropped again by 1.5 points so he’s at 52.5 he also dropped on health care but I cant find it. Like you said roughly the same numbers. So there

That “plurality” term is kind of misleading. In the main public option part of that poll, CBS/NY Times conveniently leaves out the actual percentages of Dem/Rep that are favor of it. Instead they just lump everything into a general all in Favor/Oppose stat. (Currently 65% in favor, 26% oppose)

Some other interesting notes about the poll:

    1. 59% of Republicans and the majority of independents do not want mandated health insurance from the government.

    2. In principal, half of all Americans think the federal government should guarantee health insurance for all Americans, the lowest number since the question was first asked in 1996. Four in 10 think this is not the responsibility of the federal government.

    3. For those who favor the public option, more people would support health care reform even if it did not include the public option than those that wouldn’t.

    4. 42% Favor Health Care Reform without a public option, 39% oppose.

    So there.

And speaking of polls, Nate Silver, whom both Pat and myself hold in high regard, released some interesting analysis about the 2010 House election.

    http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2009/09/generic-house-polling-suggests.html

There is some cool statistical stuff here, but this is the best part:

“53-47 popular vote win for the Republicans.

Would 53% of the popular vote be enough for the Republicans to win a House majority? A quick look, based on my analysis with John Kastellec and Jamie Chandler of seats and votes in Congress, suggests yes.”

    Wohoo!

Once the Dems finally tells the GOP to STFU with Reconciliation on Health Care Reform with a public option, Obama’s poll numbers will sky rocket and the Re-Thugs will once again disappear into the wilderness of irrelevancy. Actually, They already are.

Dead Men Walking, And talking …..TRASH !

Don’t think so ? Go ahead, Ignore reality but at least check the
Vegas odds before you bet on a Republican Majority or Presidency anytime within the next 40 years. :) Lol

realfoxnews: You’re wrong in Comment No. 3 about Fox out with a new poll showing Obama’s approval rating at 52.5. I’ve looked everywhere and can find no such poll. The most recent Fox poll on Obama’s approval rating is exactly I stated in Comment No. 2.

  • 8. realfoxnews  |  September 25th, 2009 at 5:22 pm

Pat go to Foxnews.com on the right side of the page towards the bottom.

  • 9. realfoxnews  |  September 25th, 2009 at 5:27 pm

Its on the Politics site. on the right side but correct me if I’m wrong with this Poll

  • 10. Pat Cunningham  |  September 25th, 2009 at 5:36 pm

realfoxnews: The item to which you refer is the RealClearPolitics average of six polls. Among those six polls, Fox and NYT/CBS have the highest approval ratings for Obama. Their numbers are exactly as I stated in Comment No. 2. So,we’re left with the fact that a poll commissioned by Fox News has a higher approval rating for Obama than the average of six polls (which belies the notion that the only polls showing the most favor for Obama are those that are cooked up by the liberal media).

In what world does 30% mostly support good news for the President?

  • 12. Illinoistom  |  September 25th, 2009 at 6:07 pm

Dude: I’ve carefully read your post and it is completely devoid of any rational thoughts. Are you trying to make a point?

Do these numbers reflect any reaction to the stimulus bill? Unfortunately, I have not heard much about results of the stimulus bill. I was banking on it kick starting the economy to get people hiring and spending. However, I haven’t heard much follow-up. I know the stimulus bill’s results probably won’t be seen for a year. I wish there was more follow-up instead of just Sean Hannity calling it “Obama’s failed stimulus bill” like the results would be immediate.

That’s “Woo-Hoo!” But come Wednesday morning, November 3, 2010, you’ll more likely be going “Boo-Hoo!” as Americans celebrate affordable health care and a strongly recovering economy and Democrats retain control of the House.

    So there.

  • 15. shawnnews  |  September 25th, 2009 at 8:30 pm

My fault– there’s a link to an NYT article on the stimulus bill not doing as much by now as predicted.

  • 16. expdoc  |  September 25th, 2009 at 8:49 pm

    Orlando,

What would be affordable health care? How much do you pay for your healthcare now and what do you get for what you pay? I wouldn’t hold your breath on that strongly recovering economy. While I hope that’s the case, even the white house hasn’t predicted that.

    A FoxNews Poll ????

Seriously, What kind of numbers would one expect from the
GOP network and why is it even relevant considering those who actually watch FixedNews ?

How bout we start getting our polling numbers from Democracy Now, The Bill Maher Show or a Michael Moore Screening??? It’s ludicrous

I swear, These Right Wingers are getting further and further out each day that passes with them in the minority. Can one even imagine how many GOP heads will explode the day after the election and that’s not counting the number of old white men who die from heart attacks once Health Care Reform passes with a STRONG Public Option.

Well, At least they’ll be covered by health insurance :)

  • 18. expdoc  |  September 26th, 2009 at 7:24 am

    Dude,

It won’t be just old white men that die if we are all forced onto the public option. In fact it’s not even the death that concerns me, what really worries me is how we can survive economically with a skyrocketing debt/deficit, continued job losses and a declining dollar. See the excellent article below about the jobless recovery and think about what that means for us in Rockford.

In the end, the health care that the govt can afford to provide isn’t going to be too pretty.

    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB125383516043639305.html

The probability that a laid-off worker will find a job grows smaller the longer people have been out of work, according to studies in the 1980s by economists Lawrence Katz of Harvard University and Bruce Meyer of the University of Chicago. “Someone unemployed for six months is much less likely to find a job in the next month than someone unemployed for one month,” Mr. Katz says.

The problem today: The proportion of the unemployed who have been out of work for over 26 weeks, at one-third, is the highest since World War II.
