Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

Is flu-vaccine delay Obama’s Katrina?

Some people are likening the delay in production of H1N1 vaccine on President Obama’s watch to the problems dealing with Hurricane Katrina on George W. Bush’s watch.

But even some conservatives are coming to Obama’s defense in this matter. Check HERE and HERE.

It will all depend on how many people die before the vaccine can be widely administered. The President’s problem is that he over promised and under delivered, hopefully not an early trend for his term.

expdoc: The vaccine manufacturers over-promised and under-delivered. The Obama administration’s mistake was in taking the manufacturers at their word. So much for the reliability of the private sector.

Wow Pat, you were privy to the meetings with the manufacturers. No, the administrations lack of common sense has shown through again. If your infrastructure is designed to make one vaccine per year for flu, what makes them think that they can make enough enough for two in the same amount of time? Just like stimulus money, it will just happen….weeeeee. We can see from Pat’s comment about the private sector, how much he dislikes it. I think Pat is much further left than liberal.

Pat-forgetting about that unhelping hand offered by the FDA that I linked last week aren’t you?

Vaccine production is closely regulated by the government including pricing. This has resulted in few manufacturers and less competition.

Distribution (at least in Wisconsin) was turned over to public health agencies, rather than physicians and hospitals, and early results were not good. Distribution and administration were ineffecient and often to the wrong patients leading to frustration. To say the government has no responsibility is absolutely false. Thankfully, the outbreak has not been as bad as predicted.

DingDong - You’re exactly correct, and Pat doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

    This article sums things up:
    http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2009/10/30/jean-card-vaccine-hn-sebelius-message/

Highlights: Vaccines require millions of chicken eggs for their production. Flu vaccines are created by injecting fertilized chicken eggs with weakened strains of a flu virus. Millions of eggs are needed to produce a single flu season’s worth of vaccine. Which means that chickens are really under the gun this year! Imagine the eggs necessary to produce the traditional annual flu vaccine and the H1N1 vaccine at the same time AND eggs for breakfast.

    AND

We’re unbelievably fortunate to have as much vaccine, as quickly, as we do. And the manufacturers and scientists involved are doing a critically important job incredibly well, considering the enormous pressure of time and public demand.

Pat sez: “The vaccine manufacturers over-promised and under-delivered. The Obama administration’s mistake was in taking the manufacturers at their word. So much for the reliability of the private sector.”

Correct me if I am wrong, but aren’t most of these vaccines produced OUTSIDE the U.S.?

Snuss your right. Also Pat why do you fight with the Doctor on this? This man knows what he’s talking about. Look what kind of job he has at OMH.

In 2004, the Dems blamed then-Pres. Bush for the vaccine shortage. Now, the Dems blame “the private sector”.

The question is: Were the Democrats lying then, are they lying now, or both?

Not sure if it’s true but I have been told that any of our 50 governors could have declared a state of emergency for their own states on this issue, but not one did so before Obama declared it Federally.

When we had the severe wildfires in San Diego the local Republicans rushed to try and compare the response and aid they provided at Qualcomm Park (football stadium) with that provided by New Orleans at the Superdome. It was like comparing apples and oranges. I was a San Diego tourist trapped in the Superdome during Katrina (Proof: My 2008 memoir, Diary From the Dome). The current spin of trying to call this Obama’s Katrina reminds me so much of the failed Republican attempt of comparing the San Diego wildfires with Katrina.

    Signed,

Paul Harris, who is not a huge lover of the Democrats or the Republicans.

This flu vaccine stuff is scary. I have been searching on the web to find information about what is in the injections. “kiwi drug” has great information. And for me who is a suffer and is allergic to many different medications even when I get a cold the only thing safe enough for me to take is my Flonase over the counter medication. So confused anyone know wheres a good place to look?
