Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

Gee, look at all those Democrats (oops, Klansmen) marching along.

SNuss: You’re an idiot. The segregationist Democrats of yore have long since disappeared. The GOP is now the party of the Old South. When Northern Democrats starting pushing for integration, heroes of yours like Strom Thurmond switched to the Republican Party.

History is not your long suit, is it, SNuss?

Pat, no matter how hard that you try to spin it, at the time that photo was taken, the Klan was composed of racist Democrats, and still is.

BTW, Pat, I just wanted to note your usual tactic of name-calling, in place of reasoned discussion. I won’t stoop to insulting your character, as I would first need to obtain an electron microscope, in order to find it.

SNuss: None of those pieces to which you linked refutes the facts stated in my comment No. 2.

In the past 40 or 50 years, Democrats and Republicans have, in a sense, traded places on matters of race, which is why the overwhelming majority of blacks consider themselves Democrats while very few belong to the GOP. (It used to be the other way around.)

Having said that, however, I should note that the nation as a whole, including the South, isn’t nearly as racist as it was when I was a kid. There’s really no comparison.

Still, it doesn’t take a genius in political science or sociology to recognize that the South changed from solidly Democratic to fairly solidly Republican in just a generation or two simply because Southern whites generally resented the Democratic Party’s push for civil rights.

The links you provided in comment No. 3, SNuss, show that the Southern racism prior to the civil rights era stands as a disgrace to the Democratic Party of old. I realize that more than you do. But for you to argue that the Democratic Party hasn’t changed since then — or that the Republican Party is still the party of Lincoln — is just silly.

Just as with the healthcare votes, the Democrats bribed their way to get support from most of the African-Americans, using taxpayer’s money for entitlement programs. They created a subservient under-class, beholden to their Leftist masters, in an economic version of slavery.
