Here’s why most Senate Republicans truly hate the New START Treaty
Yes, the majority of Senate Republicans are opposed to ratification of the New START Treaty partly because they don’t want to give President Obama a political victory — especially during a lame-duck session just weeks after a big GOP victory in the midterm elections.
And yes, it bugs Senate Republicans that polls show widespread bipartisan support for the treaty among ordinary Americans. That’s why the obstructionists have tried their damnedest to raise doubts about the wisdom of New START.
But nothing annoys these Senate GOPers more than the fact that the entire national-security establishment — including every living Republican secretary of state and every living Republican secretary of defense and all the brass hats at the Pentagon, including the Joint Chiefs of Staff — are on Obama’s side in this matter.
You see, that just doesn’t comport with the right-wing meme that Democratic presidents, especially THIS Democratic president, are weak on national-security issues.
That’s what bothers them most. They just hate it when their corner on the patriotism market and their presumed ownership of national defense are diminished by the spectacle of everyone else so smartly saluting the current commander-in-chief.
