Ever since the dawn of expensive media campaigns in American politics, all of our presidents, Republicans and Democrats alike, have engaged in fundraising for their own re-election campaigns or to benefit their respective political parties — even in times of war or economic distress.
But this little historical fact seems not to have occurred to the loonies who are making a big fuss over President Obama’s trip to Chicago, where he’ll celebrate his 50th birthday tomorrow with a fundraiser.
Of course, what really bothers the right-wingers is the possibility that Obama will have a lot of money with which to run for re-election next year. That just annoys the hell out of them.
By the way, George W. Bush attended 338 fundraisers in his eight years in office, during which America was at war almost the whole time. That’s an average of 3.5 fundraisers a month.
