Quick version of Obama’s speech

My favorite part of this video is the nano-second during which the dour Mitch McConnell’s sad-sack visage fills the screen — in dramatic contrast to the energy with which Obama makes his remarks.

  1. Neftali: That AP story to which you link doesn’t rip apart Obama’s proposal as much as it notes that it’s up to Congress to pass legislation that pays for the plan. As the AP puts it, “those are highly iffy propositions” — a profound grasp of the obvious with Republicans in control of the U.S. House and holding filibuster power in the Senate.

As I’ve noted in a post subsequent to this one, lots of economists like Obama’s plan, but worry about the obstructionists in Congress.

  2. Neftali: Jonathan Chait rightly dismisses the AP story as “ridiculous” and says it merely claims that “Obama’s plan isn’t paid for if Congress refuses to pay for it”:

  3. expdoc says:

My plan is to employ everyone, feed everyone and bring peace to the world.

Of course you like my plan, but do you think it will work or do you have questions?

  4. If his plan is so bad, the republicans should pass it as is and then use its failure as a campaign talking point.

  5. expdoc says:

    Jerry,

    I agree with you.

I think Obama has proposed this plan knowing that the economy will not improve and that all he really hopes to gain is political advantage when the Republicans do what he expects, which is to not pass it at all. After all, why should they vote for a plan which adds to the deficit after just having a huge battle over raising the debt ceiling because they wanted to get a handle on the deficit?

The politically smart thing for the Republicans would be to make a big show of passing the plan just as Obama proposes it, even though in principle they oppose it. This is of course when he does actually submit a plan. In addition, they should make sure that every dollar of EXTRA cuts that the deficit reduction committee proposes related to paying for this half plan is clearly marked as such.

  6. Jerry: expdoc is in deep denial of the irrefutable fact that the Republicans don’t want the economy to improve under Obama, because they don’t want him getting the credit. They are pathological Obama haters, because their Tea Party rulers demand it. Any Republican lawmaker who cooperates with Obama to the slightest can pretty much expect a primary-election challenge from a neanderthal. And if doc has a chance to vote in said primary, he’ll back the neanderthal.

  7. expdoc says:

Such a cute little liberal hack you are Cunningham.

Your post is as predictable as Obama’s half-plan.

  8. Poor doc just hates it when anyone sees through the charades of his obstructionist Republican friends in Congress. History will not look kindly on that gang.

  9. expdoc says:

I prefer seeing through the charade of Keynsianism and liberalism.

On another note, it occurred to me the other day that given your charge of current Republican obstructionist tactics on the economy, you must also agree with all of those conservatives who charged Harry Reid and the liberals with hoping that we would fail in Iraq in order to further their own political hopes.

    Am I right?
