Rick Santorum says suffering is good for children

Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum, a devout Roman Catholic, apparently subscribes to his religion’s belief in redemptive suffering (which is explained HERE.)

At a town hall meeting in Iowa yesterday, Santorum decried government efforts to protect children from economic suffering. He said: “If you’re a Christian, suffering is part of life, and it’s not a bad thing. It’s an essential thing.”

Santorum’s own childhood seems not to have included a lot of economic suffering. His father was a licensed psychologist, and both of his parents had government jobs. He went to good schools, was a frat boy in college and ended up with a law degree from Penn State University.

Santorum’s estimated net worth is between $880,000 and $1.9 million.
