Study: People with low IQs tend to be racists and social conservatives

Batten down the hatches, good people, because you’re going to hear a lot of outrageous distortions about THIS:

There’s no gentle way to put it: People who give in to racism and prejudice may simply be dumb, according to a new study that is bound to stir public controversy.

The research finds that children with low intelligence are more likely to hold prejudiced attitudes as adults. These findings point to a vicious cycle, according to lead researcher Gordon Hodson, a psychologist at Brock University in Ontario. Low-intelligence adults tend to gravitate toward socially conservative ideologies, the study found. Those ideologies, in turn, stress hierarchy and resistance to change, attitudes that can contribute to prejudice, Hodson wrote in an email to LiveScience.

Notice, please, that the guy did not say all social conservatives are stupid racists. But one of our favorite right-wing nitwits, Jim Hoft (above) of Gateway Pundit, thinks he did, as we see in the headline on THIS POST.

This is the same Jim Hoft whose stupidity was featured HERE about a year ago.

Is Jim Hoft also a racist? I’ll plead agnosticism on that question, but THIS GUY says Hoft’s Web site frequently promotes racism.

After living in Arizona for 50 years, I can tell you how true the research results are. Completely valid. I sent this article to people in my family asking if anyone was surprised. I got exactly the response I expected from my secretly racist, right-wingnut, evangelical, knee-jerk , Ayn Rand-worshipping (which makes no sense since she was anti-christianity) “minister” brother as I always get when science conflicts with his sad philosophy – “It is tripe and I am surprised at all you people who believe it.”

  2. Fox won’t like this, no siree Bob.

  3. Debbie, you should have spent the last 50 years in Lake Woebegon instead. There are no below-average people there, so there is no racism or prejudice. Also, I understand that it has been eliminated on the East Coast (from Washington D.C. north to Maine, anyway) and on the West Coast (farther west than Arizona, apparently). Those areas also don’t contain any of those disappointing “bottom 50 percenters”.

  4. This will be my last post on Applesauce. It’s a complete waste of my time. I enjoy reading different perspectives and opposing viewpoints, but there is nothing here of any value whatsoever.

As for this latest post: you need to go back to school, take an elementary course in logic or statistics, and learn that correlation does not imply causation. Assuming all the research you cite is valid (which is a generous assumption), all you can say is that dumb people tend to be racists (which I knew) and that dumb people tend to be conservative (which I can admit as a possibility). It does NOT say that conservative thinking is itself inferior or that it causes people to be stupid, which is clearly how you all wish to spin this.

The stupidest people here are those who interpret facts to reinforce their own bigoted view of the world. And some of the biggest bigots I know are liberals.

And Debbie… chill out, girl. Life is too short to carry around such hatred.

  5. Debbie, you could have said it in two words. Jan Brewer

  6. Dan says that I “wish to spin this” stuff to suggest that “conservative thinking is itself inferior or that it causes people to be stupid.”

I suggested no such thing. In fact, I wrote this of the author of the study at issue: “Notice, please, that the guy did not say all social conservatives are stupid racists,” which is to say that he didn’t mean that social conservatives are invariably stupid or mostly racist.

I know lots of social conservatives who are pretty bright and not at all racist. But, of course, I don’t know any racists who are bright. Racism is stupid, no matter how you slice it.

  7. Dan F, I had a chemistry professor at Rock Valley College 40 years ago who had a poster of Einstein on the wall of his office with the caption “illegitemum non carborundum” on it (or a pretty close Latin spelling). I asked him what it meant, and he said “don’t let the bastards grind you down”. If you give up on this blog, then the bastards win.

  8. Terry: “Illegitimi non carborundum” is one of several variations of that phrase. And it’s mock Latin, not real Latin. The phrase supposedly was coined in World War II by some British wag.

  9. Really, Pat? I was sure it was a direct Einstein quote-he was real good fluent in Latin.

  10. Terry: My favorite Einstein quotation is this one: “Imagination is more important than knowledge.”

And non-racist liberals like Al Sharpton, Jessie Jackson, Rev. Wright, Louis Farakhan are Geniuses.
Plus all of the Liberals that live in Detroit too.

My favorite Einstein quote is “Don’t believe everything you read on the internet.” :)

  13. Cousin Inbred wants us to believe that Louis Farrakhan is a liberal.

    Cousin Inbred’s moniker is appropriate.

While reading the comments, it occurred to me that all angels live in heaven. I think that no one can be 100% liberal or consevative, and in an equal dialogue involving both sides of the political fence on this forum, I can guarantee that everyone will agree on some issues as much as they may disagree on others. In my experience, even the most obstinate misologists seem to converge with alleged contrasting opinions, on enough points to convince an intelligent person that when all’s said and done, most people balance out to be very similar.

All people share one phenomena. That is; were it not for the “unintelligent”, the “intelligent” wouldn’t exist, and vice versa. This indicates that no one is necessarily more intelligent or superior than the other. The two polar opposites are symbiotically linked, each dependent on the other for existence. The only possible sub-intelligences, would be the individuals who actually attempt to divide the two, or postulate that one can exist without the other, which is of course, impossible.

Cousin Inbred, after reading your post I’m forced to infer that compared to you, yes, they are geniuses.

Cousin Inbred, one thing’s for certain; YOU aren’t one. When it comes to a natural at being stupid, you da man!
