Why do most conservatives see Obama as a peacenik when he’s actually anything but?

The answer to the question in the headline above lies partly in the fact that conservative Republicans are inclined to think of themselves as tougher and more decisive defenders of American interests than the softies of the Democratic Party.

This mindset, however, is almost entirely wrong in the case of Barack Obama, as Peter Bergen argues HERE:

The president who won the Nobel Peace Prize less than nine months after his inauguration has turned out to be one of the most militarily aggressive American leaders in decades.

Liberals helped to elect Barack Obama in part because of his opposition to the Iraq war, and probably don’t celebrate all of the president’s many military accomplishments. But they are sizable.

Mr. Obama decimated Al Qaeda’s leadership. He overthrew the Libyan dictator. He ramped up drone attacks in Pakistan, waged effective covert wars in Yemen and Somalia and authorized a threefold increase in the number of American troops in Afghanistan. He became the first president to authorize the assassination of a United States citizen, Anwar al-Awlaki, who was born in New Mexico and played an operational role in Al Qaeda, and was killed in an American drone strike in Yemen. And, of course, Mr. Obama ordered and oversaw the Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden.

  1. But wait wasn’t it the Bush/Cheney torture machine that made it all possible?

I’ve always thought the republican strategy was to claim the president was some sort of leftist while he moves center or right from his campaign promises.
They don’t even believe their own crap about health care being a government takeover or pwergrab if they selected Mitt Romney as their nominee. Romney can run ads of the 60 Minutes piece done right after the 2010 liberal no-show election where Obama says he took a bunch of Republican ideas and made it into Democratic Health Care Plan.
The only thing they are upset about — if anything — is that their party doesn’t have a nominal hold on the reins of power.
The entire “What is America Becoming?” spiel only works with party rubes and people who seriously thought Obama wasn’t really born in the United States.
In the same token, the liberals are falling for their own gab about the GOP’s new supposed War on Women. The GOP has never been in favor of government funded social programs. I read they supported Planned Parenthood’s birth control services because it allegedly was going to reduce the number of welfare recipients and prevented abortions. That line isn’t touted anymore. Still they aren’t doing anything new.

  3. “The entire “What is America Becoming?” spiel only works with party rubes and people who seriously thought Obama wasn’t really born in the United States.”

Well, I am neither a rube nor a birther and I often wonder “What is America Becoming?”

I also don’t see Obama as a peacenik.

In fact, his Presidency has revealed the utter hypocrisy of the left when it comes to foreign policy and it’s criticism of the right.

Obama was elected by the left because he ripped Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld for their strategy on the war on terror (and that hope and change nonsense)

Then the lefties saw their supposed liberal candidate continue to follow the same timeline and strategy as the evil war mongering Republicans and even ESCALATE the war in Afghanistan.

If Bush would have been re-elected and done exactly what Obama has done the idiot leftists would have been having hissy fits and trying to storm the White House. Their silence has been deafening and very telling.

  4. Doc; In 1968 Richard Nixon campaigned on ending the Viet Nam war. After he was elected , he escalated the war, and even went into Cambodia and Laos. He started the peace talks, but the war still didn’t end until 1974, 5 years after he was elected. South Viet Nam still fell to the North in 1975.

I realize you’re still wet behind the ears, and don’t know about the Viet Nam war, so don’t be so high and mighty with your name calling of the left. Your side is guilty of the same war tactics.

  5. My side? Hmm, I sorta thought we were all on the same side.

And your point proves mine perfectly. About liberal hypocrisy and all.

Expdoc has a false view of history — a common error on the right. Obama won the election because he was correctly able to sell the fact that the Iraq invasion had become the focus of our war on terror rather than the actual culprits behind the 9-11 bombings — Bin Laden. To complain that Obama deceived people by escalating the war in Afghanistan is ridiculous. He campaigned that he would do that very thing.

  7. I didn’t say he deceived anyone.

I said that liberals are hypocrites because they are.

Hear much about Gitmo lately? How did that whole terror trial in New York City thing work out? And how has our most Distinguished and premature Nobel Peace Prize winner done on keeping the peace? Or are we still at war?
