Report: Republicans to play significant role at Dem convention

Tentative plans for next month’s Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., are beginning to take shape, as we see HERE:

Advisers to President Barack Obama are scripting a Democratic National Convention featuring several Republicans in a prime-time appeal to independents — and planning a blistering portrayal of Mitt Romney as a heartless aristocrat who “would devastate the American middle class,” Democratic sources tell POLITICO.

According to convention planning documents, the three-night convention in Charlotte, N.C., early next month will seek to “[e]xpose Mitt Romney as someone who doesn’t understand middle class challenges” while also burnishing “the President’s image as someone whose life story is about fighting for middle class Americans and those working to get into the middle class.”

Each night of the convention will include a star turn for what planners call “real people” — for instance, an auto worker whose job was saved, a student who benefited from college loans and an entrepreneur fueled by federal research-and-development funds.

The most innovative — and harshest — element of the preliminary program is a nightly “social contrast” in which two people describe their personal experience with a hot-button issue — one person lauding the president’s actions, the other taking Romney to task. “Each paired-testimonial should have an ‘unexpected’ participant,” the documents say.

Regarding the Democratic Convention, Jennifer Rubin nails it:

This comes as Politico reports the Democrats’ convention will be used to, you got it, slime Romney. “Advisers to President Barack Obama are scripting a Democratic National Convention featuring several Republicans in a prime-time appeal to independents — and planning a blistering portrayal of Mitt Romney as a heartless aristocrat who ‘would devastate the American middle class,’ Democratic sources tell POLITICO.” No shocker there.

“You have to wonder if anyone in the Obama camp has any doubts that the orgy of venom will turn off young voters, depress occasional voters and pump up the Republicans even more.”

  2. Give em a break Neftali.

They need to have a convention and they can’t really talk about any smashing successes over the last 4 years. They might as well try and change the subject and do what liberals do best…

  3. Oh, I”m sure the GOP old-white-guy festival will be a romping stomping party of positivity that reflects the true nature of America, right? Please. The GOP will do what it does best; fire up and pander to the religious nutjobs stuck on nothing but social issues that don’t matter much to most Americans; trot out a few “diverse” Republicans to make the desperate claim that the party is more “inclusive;” and make a desperate attempt to paint their bland gazillionaire flip-flopping nominee as inspiring leader in touch with the “middle class.” Good luck with that. . .

It wouldn’t surprise me if they bring out the fake hacks again, those boring old white men who cut and run from their party and voted for the well scripted man. I hope that the Republicans have place cards and invitations for the several dozen Democrats who won’t attend their own convention, even in their own state.
