CORRECTION: Todd Akin did NOT say breastmilk can cure homosexuality

NOTICE: THIS POST FROM EARLIER THIS MORNING TURNS OUT TO HAVE BEEN BASED ON A PARODY. I WAS WRONGLY CONVINCED THAT THE STORY WAS FOR REAL WHEN I SAW NUMEROUS LINKS TO IT ON THE INTERNET. NEXT TIME, I’LL BE MORE CAREFUL.)

When I first read THIS, I thought it was a parody — something from The Onion perhaps.

It’s not:

Missouri U.S. senate candidate Todd Akins has stoked more outrage today by claiming that male homosexuality is a disease and that the medical establishment has found the cure.

The Republican congressman, already under fire for his controversial comments regarding rape, told a reporter for Cape Girardeau’s KBSI 23 News that “female breastmilk – when fed directly to an adult homosexual male daily for at least four weeks – has a 94% chance of permanently curing homosexual perversions.”

Akin made the scientifically dubious statement during an interview that was supposed to mark the “rebirth” of his campaign to defeat incumbant U.S. senator Claire McCaskill.

Akin was leading in the polls until August 19th when he told a local radio host that victims of “legitimate rape” could not become pregnant because “the female body has ways of shutting that whole thing down.” In the wake of the ensuing controversey his 11 point lead in the polls has turned into a 10 point deficit, and obeservers have written off his chances at winning the seat.

It is satire. It was first published on TheCurrant.com, a parody/satire site like the Onion. I know, it’s hard to tell these days. Look at the very top right corner in small print:

    http://dailycurrant.com/2012/08/26/todd-akin-claims-breastmilk-cures-homosexuality/

  2. Actually, it is a parody.

It’s from the Daily Currant, “The Global Satirical Newspaper of Record.”

Check the other headlines on the front page.

That doesn’t take away from the fact that these days it’s actually hard to tell what’s parody and what’s real wingnuttery.

Sorry to tell you but it is a parody. Came from The Daily Currant which is as much a satirical web site as The Onion.

  4. Heads up: it is satire.
The Daily Currant’s subtitle is “The Global Satirical Newspaper of Record”

  5. The homosexuality/breast milk thing actually IS satire. It’s from The Currant which is a satire site similar to The Onion.
Although the “legitimate rape” fiasco is true.

It’s very sad that we can’t tell the difference between truth and satire when reading about the Republicans. It’s not our fault, it’s theirs.

  6. Daily Currant is a Satirical website as indicated on the upper right corner of the page you link to.

  7. Thanks to Nacho, Anon, Lea and Emily for pointing out that I was suckered by a parody.

    Correction has been made.

Its too bad liberals are so weak with facts that they will blog and “publish” anything without worrying about it being true or not. Guess when you get used to lying as a form of communication, you quit caring about what the implications might be.

  9. This is a lame excuse for my having fallen for the satire from the Daily Currant, but it’s the best I can do:

It wouldn’t have really surprised me if Todd Akin actually had suggested that breastmilk could “cure” an adult male of his homosexuality.

After all, that’s not much nuttier than certain other things Akin has said.

  10. Richard Weber: If you think we liberals are “weak with facts,” you ought to check out Mitt Romney’s rhetoric.

He reminds me of something Dorothy Parker once said of one of her fellow writers: “Every word she writes is a lie, including ‘the’ and ‘and.’”
