The endless Republican quest for an Obama scandal

The more rabid Obamaphobes on America’s political right no doubt often dream that headlines like the one above will someday apply to the Obama administration.

So far, however, these wingnuts have had no such luck. Even the Benghazi fuss hasn’t been working out for them.

As I argued HERE and HERE a few weeks ago, the Benghazi delirium has been mostly bunkum.

And just yesterday, Paul Waldman offered THIS EXPLANATION of what’s behind the effort to turn the Benghazi matter into something it isn’t:

I can sum it up in two words: scandal envy. Republicans are indescribably frustrated by the fact that Barack Obama, whom they regard as both illegitimate and corrupt, went through an entire term without a major scandal. They tried with “Fast and Furious,” but that turned out to be small potatoes. They tried with Solyndra, but that didn’t produce the criminality they hoped for either. Obama even managed to dole out three-quarters of a trillion dollars in stimulus money without any graft or double-dealing to be found. Nixon had Watergate, Reagan had Iran-Contra, Clinton had Lewinsky, and Barack Obama has gotten off scott-free. This is making them absolutely livid, and they’re going to keep trying to gin up a scandal, even if there’s no there there. Benghazi may not be an actual scandal, but it’s all they have handy.

Steve Benen has THIS WARNING for the GOP’s scandal-mongers:

I’d just add one thing to keep in mind going forward: the boy who cried wolf didn’t do himself any favors. For Republicans to scream “Watergate!” and set their hair on fire every time there’s even a hint of a controversy that kinda sorta might involve the administration, they’re undermining their own credibility.

With this in mind, if/when there’s a legitimate scandal involving the Obama White House, and Republicans once again go berserk, there will be plenty of folks who simply roll their eyes, tired of the faux outrage and manufactured controversies that never pan out. They’ll say, “No, no, this time there really is a wolf,” and many will respond, “We’ve heard it all before.”

    Scandal envy! So funny.

You reading this, Ted Biondo? Or are you too busy extinguishing your hair?

  2. Brian Opsahl

Teds busy being a Nazi simpathizer…Yes on his own blog, he has this guy named nussifer who he lets treat people like newspaper in a puppy cage. This guy is so far in the gutter that Ted would have to dig up Hitler and millions of Jews to be any lower. Lets just hope he doesn’t find this Blog where at least the truth will be spoken.

The Fact is that at least Applesause works from the side of truth an Honesty and even some fairness…If you ever have watched Fox (i only recomend when drinking) news then go Teds blog he quotes word for word the lies they preach nightly.

  3. It doesn’t help that the Democrats are being equally stubborn about the whole Benghazi incident. There is no question the administration played it off in the first couple of weeks in trying to state it wasn’t terrorism and Al-Qaeda when it was. Its almost like they’re trying too hard to be the anti-Bush. Plus someone in government screwed up by not having appropriate security there in the first place.

That said, the Democrats should just fess up, and move on. And even if they don’t we all know the truth anyway. Republicans shouldn’t be wasting taxpayer time on investigative Congressional hearings on the matter. Let it go already. We got much more important issues to deal with.

@ neftali…you said someone screwed up by not having the appropriate security there in the first place…well your right…somebody did screw up….Paul Ryan was asked over a year ago to provide more Embassy security to the tune of some 3 million dollars…so thats where it starts…..but Fox is desperatly trying to pin anything on Mr Obama

The CIA and NSA are not partisan, and they were certainly not calling the consulate attack an al-Qaeda job at the time.

I think it is commendable to have an administration that does not proscribe conclusions to the intelligence community (been there!). Patient, objective analysis should not be sacrificed for political ends.

Pointing fingers over whether it should have been immediately called an “act of terror” is just demagoguery. Typical of McCain, but a former JAG officer like Graham should know better.

  6. Brian Opsahl

Correction that was 300 million …sorry

  7. Brian Opsahl – The existing budget was more than enough. Benghazi is one of the most hostile places on the planet with an American embassy. It doesn’t take too much to allocate appropriate resources to the right parts. Its clearly the fault of the existing White House administration.

  8. Brian Opsahl

Then why the request a year ago…from Hillary and 300 million buys alot of protections…wouldn’t you say…i do agree more should have been done, but thats in hindsite. Right !!

  9. GOP gotcha politics ended on November 6. They lost big time and should get over it.

The biggest story I read on FB was that Obama, Clinton and Biden sat in the situation room and listened to the embassy staff die and did nothing. Of course, the contradicts the claim that Obama was campaigning while the embassy staff died. The narative is the same — Obama turned a blind eye to US staff.
The newest line about Ovama is that he wants to nationalize Hostess.
People believe all this stuff or at least say they do to make conversation.
BTW, Ted is a fine person. I think he is wrong on his mational politics, but he is fine in person. You should really lower the rhetoric you use on his page, Brian. No one in this city is a Nazi. Just like the looney right throws around the term communist, the looney left used “Nazi” with ease.

  11. Brian Opsahl

Well it looks like John MCain and Fox news is wrong again and i think Mr MCain sould applogize to Ms Rice who he has been slamming all week with lies, what say you Neftali !!

  12. shawnnews

I’ve tried posting a couple times from my phone but I probably have a typo in my email address. It needs to be said though.
Ted is not a Nazi sympathizer. That’s out of line.
You should not be throwing these terms around carelessly, Brian. That’s what high school and college kids do or people in the Tea Party do when they call others Nazis and Communists. They either have no idea what a Nazi or a Communist is or they do and think it’s acceptable to tar their political opponents with such names. It’s irresponsible hyperbole. These political affiliations became murderous. As far as I know people who comment on the Star’s boards don’t harbor murderous intent.

  13. Brian Opsahl

@ shawn: I couldn’t agree more, but what you don’t no is that on Teds blog he allowed one of his lap dogs. “nuss” to compare me with a Nazi, when i confronted him, he sided with his in the gutter ass clown, I tried everything i could to have it stopped, accept reporting him to the abuse line …which I wont do (not a rat) ….I told Ted how out of line he was and his responce was to ridacule me on a differant blog…so now your up to date. Sorry I went into the gutter and acted just like them…asshamed a little but got pissed off…again sorry about my bad taste. you should go back and read what this wingnut said to me and you will unerstand…

  14. Sure. Our consulate torched, ambassador and three others murdered, all in the admin. said it was the result of a YouTube video with 300 hits, now debunked. Admin lies to American people. Sure, nothing to see hear. I can’t believe how you liberals even look at yourselves in the mirror.

  15. Brian Opsahl

@ Scott, When the Sec,of St, requested some 300 million dollars from Congress for upgrades in security for our Embassys more than a year ago do you think this would have helped what happened in Benghazi. there is alot of blame to go around when these attacts happen, but if you can’t see what Fox and friends are doing your blind. Clearly this network is trying desperatly to find dirt..any dirt they can on Mr Obama.

When they figure out what happened over there they will tell us…not Fox guessing every night about what they say next to start some more conspirecy talk….they do this every single night !!

  16. Brian,

You need to get over the embassy budget thing. It had NO relation to what happened in Benghazi. That budget cut was for worldwide embassy construction, maintenence and security.

  17. Brian Opsahl

Your telling me to get over the budget thing…as John MCain, Lindsy Gram and Fox news make it as they go….really Doc: Did MCain lie all week or NOT…SIR !! Was Fox not proven wrong on all they said…SIR !! The General spoke about protocol and exactly what he told Susan Rice to give to the Media, and then she did exactly that….wheres the problem
