GOP House committee chairs are all white males

The notion that demography is destiny in American politics seems lost on the Republican majority in the U.S. House, as we see HERE:

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) announced who will chair all of the major House committees in the next Congress. And it turns out they all have something in common besides party affiliation: they’re all white men.

There isn’t a single woman or minority included in the mix of 19 House committee chairs announced Tuesday — a stark reality for a party desperate to appeal to women and minorities after both groups overwhelmingly rejected Republicans just weeks ago in the presidential election. The one female committee chair that House Republicans currently have, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.), is stepping down because her term is up. While there are still two lower-tier House committees awaiting a chair assignment — the Ethics Committee and House Administration — neither committee has any women or minority members.

At least one Senate Democrat was quick to point out that something is missing from the Republican lineup.

“Disappointed to see House committee chairmanships in the 113th Congress will not include a single woman. -PM,” tweeted Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), who included a link to Boehner’s press release announcing the chair posts.

A House Republican leadership aide declined to comment on the lack of diversity in the party’s committee leadership.

Great. I see my local Congressman, Richard “Doc” Hastings, on there. When he first ran for Congress, he had promised to only run for two terms. He was in office when I moved out here. Since then he’s run in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2012. So much for his promise. And the guy’s about as useful as teats on a bull. When GWB was prez, Doc represented Crawford, TX more than he represented SE Washington. He is just a butt kisser for the GOP and frequently votes against the best interests of his district. But our rightwing morons re-elect him every time because he has an “R” after his name on the ballot.

  3. There, in white and white, is a big part of the problem with the GOP today.

  4. OK gentlemen the first order of business is to find a congresswomen to take notes.

  5. They are listed in the binder.

  6. They were all appointed because they are the brightest and best for the job. Period.

Norway years ago mandated that corp. boards elect a significant percentage of women, I think it was around 30%. The complaining was rampant accompanied with dire predictions. A couple of years later everybody now claims it is a wonderful law and did much to improve companies over and above had they stuck with the status quo.

Coincidence the Scandinavian countries routinely rank at or near the top in quality of life issues?

Hey John McCain is this another example of your parties American Exceptionalism?

  8. Yeah….about that. Liberals may want to look at the new 2013 Obama cabinent before questioning GOP diversity. Mitt Romney’s binders would come in handy right now.

Mitt’s binders full of women would be about as helpful as the binder where McCain found the hockey ditz.

Together those men ran the two most inept and embarassing presidential campaigns of my lifetime. Nothing good could possibly come from trusting their judgment on cabinet officers.

Of course Susan Rice – the best person for the Sec. State job – got Borked by the mysoginist party, but no big deal right? I was expecting a nice little Swift Boating of Kerry, too, when he agreed to come in as understudy.

  10. Ah yes, it’s the nasty Republicans who made the President pick a white male cabinet.

    Liberal hypocrisy is so entertaining.

They certainly made him dig deeper into the rich white male binder after they found Rice too uppity and unfamiliar.

Rice’s Benghazi culpability = mother of all squirrels.
