Regarding the scandal at Rutgers
The dismissal of Rutgers University basketball coach Mike Rice for his boorish treatment of players (HERE) brings to mind this observation from the late Heywood Broun:
“Sports don’t build character. They reveal it.”
Meanwhile, I’m betting that countless college and prep coaches across the land are now thinking long and hard about how they’ve dealt with the young athletes in their charge. I somehow doubt that Mike Rice’s offenses are all that rare.
And even if most coaches don’t physically or verbally abuse their players, there probably are far too many of them who fail to heed what another man named Rice — Grantland Rice — once said:
When the One Great Scorer comes
To write against your name
He marks not that you won or lost
But how you played the game.
