Misreading a Gallup poll to infer that most Americans don’t think the issue of guns is important

The Gallup organization recently conducted a poll in which this question was posed to a cross-section of American adults:

“What do you think is the most important problem facing the country today?”

The responses were in this order:

Economy in general                                      24%

Unemployment/Jobs                                    18%

Dissatisfaction with Government               16%

Federal budget deficit/Federal debt           11%

Healthcare                                                         6%

Ethical/Moral/Family decline                       5%

Immigration/Illegal aliens                             4%

Education                                                           4%

Guns/Gun control                                             4%

Situation with North Korea                             4%

Lack of Money                                                    3%

Welfare                                                                 2%

Lack of respect for each other                          2%

Poverty/Hunger/Homelessness                      2%

Foreign aid/Focus overseas                              2%

Taxes                                                                      2%

Notice, please, that Gallup asked respondents to identify a single issue they consider “most important.” The responses don’t mean that people don’t consider other issues important. They could pick only one issue as “most important.”

Yet, at least two Web sites (HERE and HERE) have willfully or obtusely misinterpreted the results of the Gallup poll to suggest that only 4 percent of Americans consider the gun issue important.

And, as I’ve noticed this morning, these misinterpretations have taken hold on Facebook.

UPDATE: HERE‘s another example of what I’m talking about.

most of the polls results were bought by the Blooming billion with million dollar donations to brain wash the citizens of this country.
