Gallup poll: Americans increasingly embrace the liberal label

For decades, conservative Republicans enjoyed considerable success in their efforts to demonize the “liberal” label — even to the extent that some Americans who supported the Democratic Party agenda shunned the L-word.

The situation got so bad that many liberals began to call themselves “progressives.”

But, as Shakespeare once put it, a rose by any other name…

And now, according to the Gallup poll, Americans generally are as likely to call themselves liberal as conservative — at least with respect to social issues.

HERE‘s the story:

What explains this shift? Are Americans’ views on social issues becoming more liberal, or is “liberal” just getting a bit of brand revival?

In short, it’s probably both.

On multiple social issues, Americans have indeed become more likely to adopt the standard lefty stance. A record 60 percent now supports same-sex marriage, Gallup found, up from 37 percent a decade ago. Support for gay marriage has reached new highs for Democrats, independents and Republicans alike.

The trend is similar on drug policy. A majority of Americans now favors legalizing marijuana, concurrent with state-level decisions to decriminalize the drug. Abortion appears to be the outlier, however, with views bouncing around a bit; “pro-choice” and “pro-life” have taken turn holding pluralities in recent years.

But there’s reason to believe that the liberal marque has improved, too.

Whatever the cause, people who seem to have always held more liberal political views — that is, Democrats — have become increasingly likely to embrace “liberal.” Also this month, for the first time since Gallup began keeping track, a majority of Democrats and those who lean Democratic identified their social ideology as liberal. It’s hard to believe that this shift — up from just 37 percent in 2010 — was driven entirely by new policy preferences.

In other poll news, this makes me happy…..

“Americans now have a more favorable view of former President George W. Bush than they do of President Barack Obama.

It is the first time in more than a decade that Americans have expressed a favorable view of Bush, at least according to a new CNN/ORC poll released Wednesday.”

If that’s the case, GWB’s ratings being more favorable than BHO, then it’s because at least GWB made it look like we were in a war to win it, even though many believe the Iraq war was based on beefed up intelligence to enable a goal already chosen before 911.

One more thing, why is it the FBI and DOJ get all muscled up when they go after sports related infractions but just couldn’t muster much zest to go after the CEO’s of the biggest banks in the world, for what they allowed to happen that caused The Great Recession.

A little fine here and there, most likely paid with printed money by the FED, and nobody of any status went to prison for those misdeeds. The administration and their Dept heads were afraid the banks would crash the economy, but the real reason is they were told to not go after them was they’re big contributors to elections and the Dems wanted to appear friendly and protective, wink wink.

As I always say, at GWB went after Lay and Skilling of ENRON fame, both big supporters of the GOP.

Even the guy who created the Obama HOPE poster is disappointed in Obama. I think mostly people feel deceived as that man we saw in 2008, who seemed to be exactly what the country and the planet needed, was just there to bring the left along as GWB did for the right, but both enabling the goals of the Neocons.
