Trump can’t face certain indisputable facts
To me, the most fascinating aspect of President Trump’s news conference today was his pathological denial that the margin of his victory in the November election was relatively slim.
Trump has stubbornly pretended over the past three months that his win over Hillary Clinton was nothing less than a solid thumping. But, of course, it wasn’t.
His first reaction to news that Clinton received 2.8 million more popular votes than he did was to claim that the numbers were skewed by widespread fraud. Of course, there isn’t a shred of evidence to support that charge, and Trump’s initial call for an investigation of the matter seems to have been forgotten, which is convenient for him. In the wake of nearly universal skepticism, even among Republican election officials, regarding the claim of vote fraud, the president apparently wants to avoid the embarrassment of having his allegation of wrongdoing debunked by a thorough probe.
Today, however, Trump expressed special pride in his victory in the Electoral College. He said it it was the widest margin since Ronald Reagan was elected.
Sorry, Mr. President, but that’s not even close to true.
In six of the seven presidential elections from 1988 (when Reagan left office) through 2012, each of the winning candidates received more electoral votes — in some cases, many more — than Trump received this past November.
Trump’s bogus claim in this regard apparently wasn’t scripted. If it had been, his aides could have warned him away from the subject. It takes only a minute or so to find the truth of the matter. But Trump believes what he wants to believe, especially when it comes to his pride.
If he had lost the election, Trump likely would have howled to the high heavens that the whole exercise was fixed. Indeed, he warned for months beforehand that massive fraud was all but inevitable. The man is psychologically incapable of accepting that he could lose in a fair fight.
Trump’s ego is one of the most fragile in all the world, which is sure to cause him lots more trouble as his presidency continues.
