Texas disaster gives Trump an excuse not to build his wall

Donald Trump was never going to make good on his campaign pledge to build a wall between the United States and Mexico, and now he’s got a convenient excuse for the failure.

The federal government will have to spend many billions of dollars for disaster relief in Texas in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. There’s no way that Congress would also be willing to spend billions more for Trump’s  cockamamie wall.

Oh sure, the Donald has promised all along that Mexico will have to bear the expense of building the wall, but only the most naïve of his supporters have ever bought into that nonsense. The Mexicans have said ix-nay, and that’s the end of the matter.

The president also has threatened to shut down the government if Congress doesn’t appropriate money for the wall. Yeah, good  luck with that. Polls show that most Americans are opposed to any such strategy. Trump’s approval ratings already are at historic lows. Even a dimwit like him can recognize that any gesture that would further diminish his popularity would be more than stupid.

If Trump is truly clever, he can cling to his wall proposal forevermore and blame Mother Nature for his failure to make good on his solemn pledge. If he lasts long enough to run for a second term in 2020 — an unlikely proposition, as I see it — he can drag out his wall proposal again and vow that he’ll make good on it before 2024.

By then, however, another big hurricane might arise, which doubtless would lead to Trump renewing his foolish claim that such disasters are not attributable to climate change.

No matter how you slice it, the wall will never be built.

Rather than donate a million dollars of his own money to the Harvey disaster he could spend that money on his wall but considering that his past charitable promises have been short or nonexistent it wouldn’t make any difference.
