Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

More stuff on why Mitt won’t get veep slot

I’ve been telling you for weeks and weeks that there’s no way John McCain is going to choose Mitt Romney as his running mate, but some of you still don’t agree with me.

Well, consider THIS.

I still think it’s going to be Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty (although I’m not as sure on that point as I once was).

Another reason why Mitt won’t get veep slot

Last week, I told you HERE of certain evangelicals who are opposed to the idea of John McCain choosing Mitt Romney as his running mate.

And then there’s the likelihood that Democrats would attack Romney for having made millions of dollars downsizing companies he acquired as a private equity investor (see HERE).

Does this nix Romney as McCain’s veep choice?

John McCain has labored mightily — and hypocritically, it might be said – to ingratiate himself with evangelical right-wingers  after having disparaged their leaders as “agents of intolerance.”

But now the Religious Right is WARNING Mr. Straight Talk not to choose Mitt Romney as his running mate.

The Mittster, as you may know, reportedly has been on McCain’s short list of veep possibilities. Some polls rate him the most popular choice, and some analysts say he could help the GOP ticket carry Michigan, an important swing state.

But would McCain dare defy Tim LaHaye and others of his ilk on this matter?

(NOTE: The link above may not work right away, presumably because of heavy traffic.  If so, try it later or Google “Romney McCain Washington Times.”)

UPDATE: For SOME REASON, I doubt that McCain will pick Sen. Ted Stevens.

More talk that McCain will name veep this week

Last night, I told you HERE of a prediction from a liberal pundit that John McCain would name Mitt Romney as his running mate as early as Wednesday.

Well, now a prominent conservative columnist, Robert Novak, also is SAYING that the veep pick will be announced this week. But Novak has not yet said it will be Romney.

Pundit says McCain will announce this week that Romney is his running mate — but I doubt it

Jed Lewison predicts HERE that John McCain will name Mitt Romney as his vice presidential choice — perhaps as soon as Wednesday, in an effort to steal some public attention from Barack Obama’s trip abroad.

I seriously doubt it, both in terms of timing and in picking Romney. But I have no specific guesses myself on either score. I just think the Mittster has too much baggage and not enough gravitas.

Will McCain pick Romney for veep slot?

According to THIS, the Bush gang wants Mr. Straight Talk to choose the Mittster as his running mate.

I don’t see any reason for Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton to quake at such a prospect.

UPDATE (March 10): The latest issue of The New Yorker has a PIECE suggesting that McCain might pick Condoleezza Rice as his running mate.

UPDATE II (March 10): In his COLUMN today in The New York Times, Bill Kristol suggests that McCain might pick Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.  Oh, yes.  Please, please, please. Anything to get him off the high court. And when the GOP ticket goes down to defeat, Obama can nominate somebody who’s not to the right of Attila the Hun  to replace Thomas on the court.

Hooray! Mitt might get back in the race

Gosh, THIS sure would be fun, wouldn’t it?

Mittster to endorse Mr. Straight Talk

Add comment February 14th, 2008

Mitt Romney is ENDORSING John McCain for president — which is tantamount to endorsing Hillary Clinton.

Why do I say that?  A Romney ad of  barely a week ago explains why:

Never mind what I said yesterday

Just hours before Mitt Romney quit the race to clear the way for John McCain’s coming battle against perhaps Hillary Clinton, the Mittster was running this ad:

Romney is quitting the race

The announcement could come today, according to THIS.
