A new NBC/Wall Street Journal poll SHOWS that voters’ greatest concern about John McCain is Sarah Palin, not George W. Bush.
But what can McCain do? Shun her? She’s not going to suddenly become qualified for the Oval Office in the next two weeks. He’s stuck with her. Yipes.
Exit polls conducted during the 1988 presidential election indicated that the first George Bush would have won by several more percentage points but for having Dan Quayle as his running mate. I’m guessing Palin will be an even bigger drag on the GOP ticket.
UPDATE: It probably isn’t going to help when word gets around about the Republican National Committee SPENDING more than $150,000 for clothing and accessories for Palin and her family.
UPDATE: Wow! A new Pew poll SHOWS Obama leading by 14 percentage points and reflects widespread concern over McCain’s “poor judgment” and public dismay with his campaign. It also shows Palin’s unfavorable rating outpacing the favorable — especially among women, 60 percent of whom hold unfavorable opinions of her.

George W. Bush has only 100 days left in the presidency, but he’s in too much of a pickle to just phone it in for the next 14 weeks.
Here’s the DEAL.

Thursday’s White House summit meeting on the financial crisis devolved into a contentious shouting match.
And that was only one of the dramas, according to THIS ACCOUNT.
UPDATE: Here’s a video summary of John McCain’s wonderful day in Washington:

Andrew Sullivan SAYS Barack Obama “has been president for quite a while already.”
When Obama suggested 13 months ago that the United States should make military incursions into Pakistan in pursuit of Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda, if intelligence reports warrant them, John McCain scoffed at the notion of invading a “sovereign” country.
But now comes word that President Bush secretly approved orders in June allowing American forces to conduct ground operations in Pakistan without consent of the Islamabad government.
Bush’s strategy in this regard, which mirrors Obama’s advice, has made McCain suddenly silent on the matter. Perhaps Mr. Straight Talk is too preoccupied by such issues as lipstick on pigs.

The Republicans are trying their best to wrest the change theme from Barack Obama, but NONE OF THEM can explain how a McCain administration would be different from the Bush administration.
Maybe some of you Applesauce readers can tell us.
