How’s that cockamamie idea of privatizing Social Security going over these days? Not well, I bet

Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.” |

Sarah Palin DEMONSTRATED the other day that she doesn’t quite understand how Social Security works.
But then, John McCain isn’t too sharp on the subject, either:

I love being a geezer. It gives me license to tell kids to get the hell out of my yard, and I get to shout at clouds and do other goofy stuff.
It also gives me the right to tell John McCain and those other Republicans to forget their dagnabbed SCHEMES for privatizing Social Security.

Has the man learned NOTHING from Bush’s experience?

One of our presidential candidates (guess which one) seems to have just now DISCOVERED how the Social Security System was designed to work, and he says it’s “an absolute disgrace.”
I don’t think even George W. Bush is this obtuse.
POSTSCRIPT: Here’s MORE on this matter.
UPDATE: Still MORE. This story seems to be sprouting legs. And rightly so. This was no slip of the tongue. It was a display of astonishing ignorance. He said it was “straight talk” to tell the American public something that most of us sentient folks have known all along.
UPDATE III: Josh Marshall has a good wrap-up here in which Mr. Straight Talk’s own words are used to block his potential escape routes:

THIS GUY, an economist, says the latest report from the Social Security Trustees shows that the system’s “actuarial balance has been improving rather than worsening.”
But, of course, we still can expect some Republicans to argue that the system needs a radical overhaul or perhaps abandonment.
John McCain once even SAID that “we stop paying Social Security” in the year 2042, if something isn’t done to save the system. But that’s not true.

A regular reader of Applesauce opined in a comment the other day that the Social Security system is an “unsustainable Ponzi scheme.”
In response to such nonsense, I refer HERE to a piece by economist Paul Krugman published four years ago today (coincidentally). The points made therein are still valid.
